LIU Protest (Continued from Page 3) team. In order to get there they (the colleges) make scholastic exceptions for athletes. A great many other concessions are made to achieve that desired goal. Students at Long Island university, stirred by banning of all intercollegiate sports after the scandal broke last weekend, and a subsequent hint that the school might continue a minor sports program, began clamoring for complete sports reinstatement. By late yesterday 2000 of LIU's 4200 student body had signed a petition urging that intercollegiate sports—including basketball—be reinstated. Man, you'll like these clear By late yesterday 2000 of LIU's 4200 student body had signed a petition urging that intercollegiate sports—including basketball—be reinstated. A university spokesman said yesterday that there was "some disruption of classes" although no major demonstration was staged. Informed that a big protest rally had been scheduled for tomorrow, LIU President Tristam Walker Metcalfe indicated it would not be permitted. The athletes arrested for throwing games and attempting to shave the winning point margin for the benefit of Salvatore Sollazzo, exconvict, are: Sherman White; Leroy Smith and Adolph Bigos of Long Island university and Ed Warner, Ed Roman and Al Roth of CCNY. Ed Gard, LIU captain last season, was arrested as the contact man, and Connie Shaff of New York university for attempting to talk a teammate into working for Sollazzo. Gard also is accused of throwing games last season. Hogan said that of some $30,000 in bribes paid the players, approximately $20,000 has been taken from the accused athletes. In assailing college basketball conditions at Madison Square Garden, Hogan blamed the participating schools—not the Garden. He said Garden officials are "making an earnest and sincere effort" to police the premises against gamblers. USF Tampering (Continued from Page 2) San Francisco coach, Pete Newel, gave questioners similar accounts. Lofgran now plays professional basketball with Indianapolis in the National Basketball association. Newell coaches Michigan State college. Newell said at East Lansing, Mich., that Lofgran told him about the incident four months after it happened. Lofgran, in Indianapolis, said he reported it to Newell only "a couple of weeks later." Lofgran said he had considered the call a practical joke, but had refused just the same. Kuzara said he never talked about the bribe offer because "I Newell said at East Lansing, Mich., that Lofgran told him about the incident four months after it happened. Lofgran, in Indianapolis, said he reported it to Newell only "a couple of weeks later." Lofgran said he had considered the call a practical joke, but had refused just the same. Kuzara said he never talked about the bribe offer because "I was too afraid something would happen to us." Newell declared the bribe attempt indicates "all the gambling is not in New York" although "in the West they go to see basketball games; in New York they seem to go to bet..." San Francisco won the 1949 invitational tournament at New York's Madison Square Garden. Last season, still a top team, the Dons won 19 and lost seven games. Basketball Coach Forrest Twogood of the University of Southern California said last night in Los Angeles that he was surprised at the revelation. "It is too bad there isn't some federal law which would put these gamblers away for life," he added. Twogood was assistant to Sam Barry at the time of the USF-SC game last year. Lofgran, according to Newell, had reported that the man who contacted him had telephoned from Portland, Ore. District Attorney John B. McCourt said at Portland last night his office had not heard of any attempted "fixes" and was not planning an investigation. A side development was reported by Portland Police Chief Charles Pray, who said Portland gamblers have been thought to be making long distance telephone calls to the East to get fast results on basketball games.
