For Results and Quick 7 Anaheim Gazette TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, JUST ANAHEIM, GALIFORNIA Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Give us this day our daily bread.—Luke 11:1-4. HISTORY—Perhaps one of the most colorful Anaheimers of all time was Max von Stroble, a romantic adventurer who stood shoulder to shoulder with Carl Schurtz and Fritz Siegle in the German revolution of 1848. After the Revolution, von Stroble took part in the great Nicaraguan adventure. After this campaign he decided to settle down in Anaheim and devote his entire energies to making wine. Though history tells us that he made good with his "grape squeezin", this venture lacked the glamour for a man of action. Von Stroble's interests were taken to the Brea hills where he drilled for oil in 1867. And though his petroleum venture was doomed to failure because of a lack of funds, he did pioneer the Brea Coast Murder Continued from Page 1 cd, however, that she loved her daughter and said: "I know she is in heaven and I know I will only suffer for the meanness I have done." Investigators planned to question Mrs. Green's husband, Franklin D. Green, Jr. Sheriff & investigators said Mrs. Green and her husband brought the baby to a doctor last week for treatment of a virus infection, then the child was taken to the county hospital where head injury was discovered. was discovered. Mrs. Green assertedly had told deputy sheriffs at first that the injury to her daughter, Patricia, was caused by a fall from a couch in their home. But her later statement, covering 14 typewritten pages, is alleged to admit that she had struck the baby on the head with her fist because she "could not stand its crying." Mrs. Green is the wife of Franklin Pierce Green, Jr. She has another daughter, now three years old, by a former husband who resides in Costa Mesa. Though history tells us that he made good with his "grape squeezin" this venture lacked the glamour for a man of action. Von Stroble's interests were taken to the Brea hills where he drilled for oil in 1867. And though his petroleum venture was doomed to failure because of a lack of funds, he did pioneer the Brea field. The German intellectual lost his shirt in an enterprise which later produced millions for others. When his oil boring days were over, von Stroble sold Anaheimers the idea that they should ask for the formation of an "Anaheim county" from the southern end of Los Angeles county. He argued that it took two days and cost six dollars for an Anaheimer to go to court at the county seat in Los Angeles. Anaheimers made him their representative in Sacramento. He lobbied for a new county—Anaheim county. Had he had the money, he might have succeeded in making his dream come true. He wired desperately for motors, but the conservative, stubborn German pioneers of Anaheim wouldn't kick through and the dream vanished into thin air. Von Stroble then tried his hand in journalism here in Anaheim. He brought culture to the community as he had a broad education and had traveled extensively before coming to California. He also tried to sell Catalina Island. In this venture, like his others, failure was his fate on the eve he was to close his greatest deal. Although he was a successful failure, Max von Stroble left Anaheim a better place because he lived and worked here. RAILROAD—In the winter of 1873-74 the Southern pacific railroad began construction on its branch line to Anaheim. It was completed in January 1875. PIONEER ANAHEIMERS—Although von Stroble and John August F. Herermann druggist and doctor, werd two of the most colorful pioneers there were many other outstanding men who lived and worked here. Although Mrs. Green has legal custody of that child, the child's father has present care of the little girl because she had been sick. Her Illness "irritated" her mother so that Mrs. Green beat her "because she cried," according to a statement said to have been made by Mrs. Green. The deceased baby, Patricia, was taken to a physician in Costa Mesa before being taken to the hospital. The doctor insisted that she be hospitalized. The murder charge was filled today, following receipt of the post mortem and Dr. Brandt's reported statement that a fall from a couch could not have caused injuries such as little Patrica had suffered. KOREAN WAR Continued from Page 1 western front and warned on his return to Tokyo that the enemy still has plenty of manpower and supplies. The first red onslaughts dented Allies lines as much as 18 miles and swept United Nations forces out of the road center of Hoengsong, 10 miles north of Wonju and 50 air miles east of Seoul. But this apparently was only the eastern wing of a heavier attack now gathering momentum. Leadoff columns of at least seven Chinese divisions massed in the area west of Hoengsong and north of Chipyong-struck southward Tuesday. They slipped past Chipyong, 19 miles west of Hoengsong, and headed down two mountain valleys toward the Wonju Yoju road. The Chinese were moving in bands numbering up to 1000 men. They ran into a fury of Allied air attacks. Allied Air Force, Marine and Navy planes combined in low-level strikes aimed to break up RAILROAD—In the winter of 1873-74 the Southern pacific railroad began construction on its branch line to Anaheim. It was completed in January 1875. PIONEER ANAHEIMERS—Although von Stroble and John August F. Heyermann druggist and doctor, were two of the most colorful pioneers there were many other outstanding men who lived and worked here. James Miller Gulpin, the pioneer schoolmaster, came to California in 1863 to dig fon gold. Prospecting, however, did not appeal to the scholar and after knocking around for several years came to Anaheim as teacher and principal of the school. He served in that capacity for 12 years when he became the principal of the Los Angeles City schools. Moses Langley Wicks, a Mississippiian, practiced law in Anaheim until 1877. He moved to Los Angeles and became a real estate operator. He and his associates layed out several cities and helped develop Southern California by exploiting the land boom of the times. Hyppolite Cahen was Anaheim's leading merchant of that day—1885. He had a young choreboy, Guy B. Barham whose father Richard Barham — operated the Planters hotel. Barham was an industrious lad. He also kept books for Eugene Meyer and company. He became deputy internal revenue collector and in 1911 when William Randolph Healst bought the Herale he became the paper's publisher, a job he held until last year.
