Carols Make for Christmas Joy
By DAVID TAYLOR MARKE
AP Education Writer
Music is important in the lives of our children. At Christmas time parents and teachers can help enrich the lives of children by teaching them carols and perhaps joining in a family chorus.
Making living worth while, says Mrs. Frank Kelly, music chairman of the Kentucky Congress of Parents and Teachers, is an immediate need of childhood. Writing in the Kentucky Parent-Teacher, she says:
“Making living worthwhile... is an idea that must be planted early and tended carefully through all the growing years. And so, from the first day he enters the public schools, the child is given not only the practical tools of communication and barter—reading, writing and arithmetic—but also the keys to better ways of living. For his bodily health there is physical education; for his understanding and adjustments to the world in which he lives, there are the sciences, natural and social; and for his emotional and spiritual development, there are the fine arts.
"Of all the arts music, perhaps, teaches the most people and touches them most intimately. Whether we ourselves sing or play or merely listen, we know that music is a part of life.
Going back to the far-off days of the psalmist David and the philosopher Plato, records show that the wise men of all times...”

SEASIDE PARK, N. J. (AP)—A man turned into a buoy last night. Army pilot Lt. William Murphy, on a routine flight, set off an all-day search yesterday when he reported seeing what he thought was a man parachuting into the ocean.
It turned out to be weather bureau radio equipment attached to a parachute and buoy.

Senate Crime investigating committee resumes today its traveling inquiry into organized rackets with a substantial report on the notorious mafia "blackhand" operations.
Sen. Estes Kefauver (D.Tenn.) committee chairman, praised a mafia operation report made yesterday by two San Francisco police officers as "the finest compilation of data on this type of operation we have yet found."
The committee has been conducting closed hearings in various cities to determine whether and to what extent a nationwide crime syndicate exists. Mafia gang activities, largely involving narcotics, would fit into such a picture.
"We had a full discussion of the people believed to be mafia members here," Kefauver told reporters. "It is not felt that San Francisco was headquarters for mafia, but it is apparent that the San Francisco bay area has had a greater number of mafia members than even Kansas City."
He praised the report submitted by Frank Abern and Tom Cahill, homicide bureau inspectors, and said they would continue adding the committee in delving into mafia operations.
After probing into bay ditions, the committee intends to recommend cution of David M. Keel perjury and contempt of Senate.
Kessel is an operator club across the bay in Costa county. Kefauver substantial charges" were against Kessel — "open gambling, slot machine influence for protection handed methods and being."
He described the easy ator as "one of the most characters the committee before it in some time accompanied by his attic no comment."

New Dolls Act Like Real People
It's beginning to look as if dolls are smarter than people.
Those in Santa's 1950s days do practically everything that ea-live children do. Even the officials of the American Toy Institute are going around with a dazed look there days, as if they were afraid to believe their eyes.
Nema, the first electronic doll, sings, laughs, talks and prays in a real little-girl voice when a button on her tummy is pressed. There's nothing to wind up or plug in; the voice mechanism operates on electronic principles.
Newborn babies of the doll family are especially precocious. There's the Blessed event doll for instance, which towns, smiles and kisses back when you press the button. It also can pout, suck its thumb and nurse. Another lifelike baby doll weeps big tears and wails lustily, just like a real live baby. The talented Dydee doll has learned to drink from a glass this year.
For fashion conscious young mothers, there's Wanda, the walking doll, dressed in an outfit designed by Sophie, the noted American couturiere, who also has turned out matching dresses for the little-girl owner. Doll and child now may walk down the street together, dressed alike.

Here's What GI's Will Get For Thanksgiving
WASHINGTON (P) — The army said today that a robust Thanksgiving dinner will be served at regular stations of the U.S. Armed Forces in the Far East and at field kitchens extending to within a few thousand yards of the front lines in Korea.
The menu, which an army spokesman said will be followed as nearly as possible throughout the Far East command, is:
Shrimp Cocktail
Stuffed Olives
Sweet Pickles
Celery
Roast Turkey with Sage Dressing
Giblet Gravy
Cranberry Sauce
Snowflake Potatoes
Candied Sweet Potatoes
Fresh Green Peas
Whole Kernel Corn
Waldorf Salad or Lettuce with Thousand Island Dressing
Ice Cream
Pumpkin Pie
Mincemeat Pie
Fruit Cake
Parker House Rolls or Bread and Butter
Candy, Mixed Shelled Nuts
Fresh Fruit
Coffee and Fruit Punch
Front line troops to whom it is impossible to serve hot foods on the holiday were promised feasts as soon as possible thereafter.
The Quartermaster corps estimated that 15,000,000 pounds of turkey will be available for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's dinners in the armed services at home and abroad.
It said it began buying them last May to be sure of getting a supply to the troops in remote areas in time.

threat from any spot on the field, but that's it. Apparently he is the heir apparent to the roles handled for the Dons by Johnny Fouch and Al Carmichael. In five league games Brancato has whizzed to eight TDs to lead in scoring.
Fullerton, meanwhile seems to have more scoring threats. Quarterback Chuck Holloway is a good passer and an excellent runner, and both halfback Bob Ferguson and fullback Larry Weaver seem to be able to break for the distance from anywhere.
Despite this, the odds will favor Santa Ana—especially if past performances are considered. The Dons hold a 16-7 edge over the Hornets, with two games ending in 13-13 ties. The Hornets, too, have won only one time since 1935. That was in 1947 when they prevailed 20-6.
Kickoff time is 2 p.m.

Judge Elmer D. Doyle called all the parties before him.

Miss Mark tearfully shook her head. Her mother said: "we'll be glad to take the baby to see them."
"Then let them keep the baby until after Thanksgiving, until Friday," Judge Doyle said. "Then you and your parents go to their home. Let them give you some pointers in child care."
Outside court, a few minutes later, Mrs. Smith, sobbing, was clinging to Linda Sue's hand when Miss Mark ran over and put her arm around the woman who has mothered her child for four months.
"They're the nicest people," said Mrs. Mark.
