For Results and Quick Korea Gift Lift Operation Urged "Make a G.I. in Korea happy at Christmas by contributing to Operation Gift Lift." This week the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce issued an added idea to individuals and organizations alike to join in its drive to obtain Christmas gifts for American service men on the Korean front. According to Junior Chamber President Fred Llewellyn, the Gift Lift is far short of its goal of 150,000 packages. Deadline for the worthwhile drive is Nov. 15. "If you haven't already contributed your gift for a G.I. on the Front," added Llewellyn, "then be sure to mail or send your gift donation to Gift Lift, Marine Reserve Armory, Los Angeles 12, before the deadline date." Packages should not be car-marked specifically for any one soldier, sailor, marine, airman, etc., because the purpose of the drive is to obtain as many packages as possible for general distribution so that every service man has a gift from the states at Christmas. Information concerning suggested gift items can be obtained at leading department stores or by contacting the Junior Chamber. Orange Flyer Plain Lucky Anaheim Pastor Named to Bureau CHICAGO — Reverend Robert Kevorkian, 711 W. Broadway, has accepted a place on the speaker's bureau for the Revised Standard Version Bible Observance in his fall of 1952 from September 30 to October 5, when the entire Revised Standard Version of the Bible will be published. The Reverend Kevorkian is the minister of Calvary Baptist church of Anaheim. Draft for Army And the Economy Says Hershey CHICAGO (AP) — Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, the nation's selective service director, says America's manpower must serve both the economy and the armed forces. He said the draft may have to be extended to 18-year-olds and to men older than 25. Hershey spoke on a Northwestern University radio panel broadcast by the Mutual Broadcasting System. Although there are an estimated 8,000,000 men in the 19-26 age group, Hershey said, some 1,000,000 have dependents, another 3,000,000 are veterans and a large Anaheim Masons Host Fullerton Anaheim Chapter of Royal Arch Masons 125 will be visited by the Fullerton chapter Wednesday evening for the initiation of a large class of candidates. Most Excellent Companion Leo Friis will be in charge of the Past Master degree and Past Grand High Priest Stanley Chapman of Fullerton will be in charge of the Most Excellent Master degree. Refreshments will be served after the program. Meeting will be at the Masonic Temple, 7:30 p.m. Rotarians Hear Adventure Clubber Gerald Price of Midway City was the principal speaker at the noon meeting of the Rotary club yesterday. He showed movies and discussed the lost Indian civilizations of Mexico. Mr. Price is a member of the Adventurers' club of Los Angeles, a past-president of the Midway City Rotary club and has served as an engineer in the employ of the Mexican government. During the meeting William Burr said the Sea Scout ship being sponsored by the Rotary and Lions club would be ready for launching in about six weeks. Ron Brandon led the songs in the absence of Mel Gauer. Orange Flyer Plain Lucky WONSAN, Korea (P)—Marine Corps Capt. Marvin I. Berg of 1018 W. Palomar, Orange, Calif., is just doggone lucky and he knows it. A few weeks ago he was picked up safely after parachuting from his shot-up plane over the sea. Recently he was flying north to communist-defended Changjin (Chosin) reservoir in northeast Korea. "I saw five carts make a quick circle, and came in on them at 700 feet," he told the Associated Press. "They were in a deep ravine. "I got just beyond them when they blew up. It was as if a big hand grabbed my Corsair. The plane did not want to move. I started looking around and saw a big hole in my radar bulb—and some other holes. "I had to climb 9000 feet to get over the mountains, and somehow I did. Over Hamhung my oil pressure was zero, and I had to bring the plane down at a strip there. I got out and counted 10 holes from that exploding ammunition. "The communists must have gotten some American shells—a 20-caliber American shell from the carts was lodged in my wing. The holes ranged from one inch to six inches in diameter. Boy, was I lucky!" Three Brassiere Bandits Convicted MIAMI (P)—A six-man criminal count jury took only 24 minutes today to convict three members of Miami's "Brassiere Brigade." The three girls—Marina Our, 24; Mrs. Betty Comigan, 23; and Mrs. Billie Ruth McNabb, 27—were convicted of smuggling coins out of the Southern Ball Telephone Co., counting room in their brassieres. The jury recommended lunianny. Judge Ben C. Willard set Monday, November 20, as the time for sentence. Attorneys for the trial said after the jury had returned its verdict. He said the draft may have to be extended to 18-year-olds and to men older than 25. Hershey spoke on a Northwestern University radio panel broadcast by the Mutual Broadcasting System. Although there are an estimated 8,000,000 men in the 19-26 age group, Hershey said, some 1,000,000 have dependents, another 3,000,000 are veterans and a large proportion of those remaining do not meet physical or mental requirements. Old Citrus Soil Tough on Growth The growth of orange, lemon, and grapefruit trees planted in soils previously cropped to citrus is somewhat reduced. According to farm advisor C. D. Gustafson, this reduced growth is about fifty per cent of the original planting. Soil fumigation of the old citrus orchard soil with carbon disulfide, D-D, Dowfume N, propylene oxide, and other fumigants can be used. He points out, however, that even though the treatment reduces the citrus nematode and fungi population in the soil, there is only a slight increase in the growth of the new tree. If the grower's property is in a favorable area, that is comparatively frost free, avocado trees can be planted. Before planting avocados careful attention should be given to type of soil, drainage, quality of water, and other factors important to successful avocado culture.
