There were indications that a federal grand jury investigation into the assassination plot in new York. Subpoenaewere issued for three Puerto Ricans—one a convicted revolutionist—after they were arrested at the apartment of the other conspirator, Oscar Collazo. At the two had any role in the plot it was not made clear. There were no indications thany charges were placed against them. Collazo, 37, was arraigned formnally in Washington on a murdecharge and held without bond for a hearing on November 21. The murder charge was the outgrowth of the facial injury to Jesse Collazo, one of the White house policemen and Secret service agents who turned back in a volley of bullets the attempt by Collazo the Torresola to storm the executive residence. Two o. Collazo's colleagues were seriously wounded. The swarthy Collazo was reported by agents who have been questioning him to consider himself a martyr to the cause of Puerto Rico in independence. Both he and Torresola belonged to the nationalist party, which is violently anti-U. S. and favors immediate independence for the Caribbean island. Officers who sought to piece together what was behind the story said the pair apparently hoped to kill the president and start a revolution here. They said Collazo told them the plot was not hatched in Puerto Rico but that he and Torresola acted on their own. All orchard heaters in Orange county nurseries or groves must either be under permit or be so dismantled as to make impossible their operation as an orchard heater, according to D. W. Tubbs, County agricultural commissioner and air pollution control officer. The deadline for obtaining the heater permits is stated as November 1, 1950, in the Rules and Regulations, and heater operators should immediately take definite steps to qualify their heaters for a permit. The permits are being issued from the Department of Agriculture headquarters at 9846 S. Harbor blvd. To qualify, the orchard heaters must be of a class for which a permit can be issued; in good repair and working condition; and reasonably clean and free from excessive solids in stacks and bowls. The Rules and Regulations of the County Air Pollution Control District, which went into effect on September 6 of this year, divide orchard heaters into four classes. Class I heaters are those capable of burning with the least possible antist party, which is violently anti-U. S. and favors immediate independence for the Caribbean island. Eighth Army headquarters called the situation "very serious." A U. S. First Corps spokesman said it was "not so good as it could be and not as good as we would like it." However, General MacArthur's spokesman in Tokyo described the main battle, around Unsaan, as a large-scale enemy defensive action and not a counteroffensive. Two U. S. Cavalry regiments are cut off there. The spokesman said U. N. forces still retained the initiative in North Korea. The officer said reinforcements, reorganized units and winter weather played heavy parts in the red asasult. The latest U. S. intelligence estimate placed total North Korean strength still operating a 26,000 men. The spokesman said this has been "revised upward considerably." He did not give the new figure. He said more red reinforcements were moving toward the Unsaan region. Air observers spotted an infantry column wearing bright green uniforms five miles north of Unsaan. Their nationality was not determined. HEART BURN TO EYE BURN LOS ANGELES (AP)—Burning of eyes may be due to the food you eat, E. W. Ashland, an osteopathic physician from Oakland, said here today. Speaking before the annual convention of the osteopathic college of ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology (eye, ear, nose and throat specialists), Dr. Ashland said food allergy may be the cause of some cases of chorioretinitis. This is an inflammation of the middle coat of the eyeball and the retina. The Rules and Regulations of the County Air Pollution Control District, which went into effect on September 6 of this year, divide orchard heaters into four classes. Class I heaters are those capable of burning with the least possible amount of smoke. Class II heaters are those which can be burned without excessive smoke when their burning rate is limited by a mechanical stop in the air regulator. Class III heaters produce excessive smoke, but by the addition of new parts can be converted into Class I or Class II heaters. Class III heaters must also be regulated by a mechanical stop; and in addition must be replaced, converted or eliminated over a three-year period commencing this season. Class IV heaters are those which produce such volumes of smoke as to be objectionable at any burning rate. Their use is prohibited. In the Rules and Regulations many of the heaters now being used are listed by name under their appropriate class. Where the heater is not designated by name, in the Rules and Regulations, it must be classified by the Control Officer. Growers may obtain further information concerning their individual problems from the County Dept. of Agriculture headquarters at 9046 S. Harbor blvd. Apart from office hours, the District Inspectors of the Dept. of Agriculture may be called upon. Growers in the Anaheim-Fullerton-Buena Park area should contact Mr. R. C. McKinley, 11312 Burton, Anaheim.
