Pollution Control
Chief Under Study
Pollution Control Chief Under Study
Choice of county agricultural commissioner D. W. Tubbs Dr. Edward L. Russell, health officer, or county building inspector Charles Donhoe as administrator of the county water pollution control regulations, is under study by the county supervisors.
Up to now, the building inspector has been acting in that capacity, but the board recently considered making Tubbs administrator on the theory that agriculture and water pollution are kindred matters. But now they are thinking of handing the job to Dr. Russell because the health department must investigate water pollution problems in any event, under state law.
None of the mentioned officials is seeking the appointment, incidentally, but express themselves as willing to take it on if necessary. Tubbs made a suggestion that is being considered—the appointment of a committee comprising heads of all departments related to water pollution, which would bring in road and flood control departments.
Possible conflict of interests between health and flood control departments was suggested by Supervisor R. J. McFadden, who said that boron in industrial waste, as one example, might not be a health question but definitely was a menace to agriculture.
Hyland Denounces 'Trick' Pitching
BOSTON (UP)—Trick pitching, the knuckle balls, "fork bulls," and sliders, can be murder on a pitcher's arm, Dr. Robert Hyland warned today.
The unnatural motions in throwing these pitches can permanently injure his elbow, he told the American College of Surgeons. The trick pitching is striking a growing number of pitchers right out of their careers, he said.
Water Subject of Chambers Meeting
Associated Chambers of Commerce members and guests will attend a pheasant dinner at Orange American Legion hall this evening, every item on the menu being a product grown in Orange county. Featuring the program will be a discussion of "The Orange County Water Problem As I See It" by Ross Shafer of Tustin.
Marie Swanson Passes Away
Marie O. Swanson, 76, a native of Sweden and a resident of California for 27 years and of Anaheim for the past year, died yesterday afternoon at the Anaheim hospital after extended illness. She made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Frank E. Butterworth, 506 E. Center st. She was a member of the White Temple Methodist church.
BOSTON (AP)—Trick pitching, the knuckle balls, "fork bulls," and sliders, can be murder on a pitcher's arm, Dr. Robert Hyland warned today.
The unnatural motions in throwing these pitches can permanently injure his elbow, he told the American College of Surgeons. The trick pitching is striking a growing number of pitchers right out of their careers, he said.
Ball players can play longer if they listen to topnotch medical advice on how to use their arms and bodies, Dr. Hyland declared.
"A pitcher can and should be taught to develop and use only those types of delivery which conform as far as possible to the normal movements of his shoulder and elbow joints."
Sliders and knuckle balls can twist the arm so much that bits of membranes and tissues are rubbed off. These bits lodge in tendons and ligaments and cause pain.
Ball players, especially pitchers, are liable to a raft of different injuries. They come from the rubbing or bone against tendons, dislocation of biceps tendons, separation of bones in the shoulders, and other causes.
Arthritic deposits forming in bone junctures have ended the careers of several fast-ball, overhand pitchers, Dr. Hyland said.
TREANOR MOVES
Frank Treanor, former manager of the Fox theater in Anaheim, has moved headquarters to the Paulo Drive-In Theater, Santa Ana.
His new location is 14361 E. Paularina, Santa Ana.
Water Subject of Chambers Meeting
Associated Chambers of Commerce members and guests will attend a pheasant dinner at Orange American Legion hall this evening, every item on the menu being a product grown in Orange county. Featuring the program will be a discussion of "The Orange County Water Problem As I See It" by Ross Shafer of Tustin, prominent water leader, and "California Depends on You" by the guest speaker, Geoffrey E. Morgan of Santa Monica, president of the Theater Guild and the Shoreline Planning Association of California.
Water will be a prominent subject of the evening, as Howard Crooke of Placentia, chairman of the chambers' agriculture committee and master of ceremonies for the evening, directs a program relating to transportation facilities for treated water delivery by Metropolitan Water District to the cities proposed for MWD annexation. The cities are Orange, Huntington Beach, Seal Beach, La Habra, Placentia, Buena Park, Garden Grove and Westminster.
COUNCIL ADJOURNED
With Mayor Charles Pearson and City Clerk Charles Griffith in Los Angeles at the current California League of Cities meeting, tonight regularly scheduled meeting of the City Council has been adjourned for lack of quorum, according to deputy city clerk Williams.
Next meeting of the Council has not been set.

She made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Frank E. Butterworth, 506 E. Center st. She was a member of the White Temple Methodist church.
She leaves one son, Lawrence E. Swanson of Glendale; two daughters, Mrs. Ann Bennett of Pasadena and Mrs. Butterworth, and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Hilgenfeld chapel tomorrow afternoon at 1:30. Rev. Hayden S. Sears officiating. Interment services will be conducted by Rev. C. I. Andrews at Forest Lawn Memorial park.
Sidney Pellew Home for Rest
Sidney Pellew, 14052 South st., well-known rancher and chairman of James Roosevelt's primaries campaign in Orange county, returned home last Friday after a three week bout in the hospital.
His homecoming was accompanied with orders from the doctor for complete rest, no visitors for awhile, and inactivity as far as politics and other activities are concerned.
The county democratic central committee will probably continue Mr. Pellew's work until he is up and about again.
Flaxseed production soared in the U.S. during the war because imports from Argentina were cut off.
Grand Jury Probes County Hospital
Investigation of the Orange county hospital, perennial grand jury pastime, continued today as the grand jury met for an extended session in Santa Ana.
No information was available regarding the course of the investigation nor its scope.
Most of the time today was said to have been occupied by a report of the grand jury's hospital committee which had worked during the summer months while the remainder of the grand jury recessed.
A report of the auditing committee also was made to the grand jury yesterday and according to the grand jury's publicity chairman, Mrs. E. E. Palmore, Santa Ana, complete audits of the hospital and Orange county Water District accounts were included.
Examination of other departments of the county government were "superficial." The grand jury lacked sufficient funds for a complete audit of all departments she said.
Next general session of the grand jury is set for November 6.

Olivar Tells Sophs To Ready Selves
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Coach Jordan Olivar of the undefeated Loyola Lions, told the sophomores on his squad today to be ready for plenty of action against oft-beaten Nevada this Saturday.
Olivar said his main trouble is getting his team up for the game. The regulars will start, he told his squad, and if all goes well he'll send the sophs in. Loyola edged College of Pacific, 35-33 last Saturday with quarterback Don Klosterman' completing 26 passes out of 51.
