COMMANDO JUMPS FROM PRIVATE TO CAPTAIN
NEW YORK—(P) When former British Commando Robert F. Bishop of Baltimore, Md., jumped from private first class to captain in the United States Marine Corps, he fulfilled the dreams of almost every Leatherneck private.
Captain Bishop joined the British Army as a private and in 1940 entered the British Commandos, seeing action in ten different countries. Wounded at Salerno, where his outfit suffered so perilous casualties, Bishop was commissioned a first lieutenant. At Zanzio, he became a captain. Later, while serving with Marshal Nico's National Army of Liberation in Yugoslavia, he earned a temporary rank of major.
When discharged at the end of the war, Bishop went to Canada and entered the Canadian Reserve as a major. Last year, returning to the United States, he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve as a private. Two weeks later reporting to Camp Lejeune with the Fifth Inventory Battalion, USMCR, as a Pfc in an assault platoon, he was notified that his application for a commission had been approved.
