Page 6 Anaheim Gazette, Thursday, Sept. 14, 1950 Crooks Swipe Gold, Cash Two Santa Ana doctors and a dentist suffered losses in cash and gold aggregating $1290.81 when burglars pried the front off of a safe in the office of Dr. Dale Brockett, dentist, at 214 E. Walnut st., Santa Ana, during last night. The burglars slipped the bolt of a back door and entered the office probably shortly after 5 a.m., today. A neighbor heard a noise in the office at that hour but did not suspect that a burglary was in progress and went back to sleep. Dr. Brockett's loss included $620 in gold used in dentistry and $282.81 in cash. Dr. Fred Hanson and Dr. James F. Edwards, physicians with offices in the same building, lost $350 and $38 in cash respectively which they had been keeping in Dr. Brockett's safe. Western Building Hits New Highs SAN FRANCISCO (P)—Building activity in western states rose to new seasonal highs in August, the daily Pacific Builder, western construction paper, reported today. The seven states reporting showed increases up to 216.2 per cent over August of last year and all except Oregon showed increases in August over July of this year. In Oregon, building activity decreased 2.9 per cent for the month. The seven state total for August, the Builder said, was $186,828,614, which was 68.9 per cent more than August, 1949, and 5.2 per cent more than the previous month. In an average year, U.S. forest fires burn over areas larger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined. LAKE'S... It Pays to Buy Nationally. Known Brands... One government official suggested that the board may attempt to check the rapid upsurge in business loans by increasing bank reserve requirements, thereby freezing" funds which otherwise would be loaned. The board itself took a first step toward using its new powers to restrict mortgage lending by setting up yesterday an "office of real estate credit" and naming Detroit banker Charles T. Fisher, to head it. An order from the board tightening up on the terms of private mortgages is expected soon, in time with the curbs it has already ordered on installment credit, effective next Monday. Chairman Thomas B. McCabe is declared, "We must curb excessive extensions of credit in all directions." Board members talked over the real estate situation with one of their top advisory groups yesterday. They are also conferring with government housing officials, who are expected to put more brakes on federal mortgage credit when the board tightens up on private terms. When Ralph Kiner hit his 34th time run in St. Louis, it marked the second year in succession that belted No. 34 in Sportsman's Park. He did it this year four days ahead of his 1949 four-bagger. Bill Heiden, 404 N. Janss st., is shown in a single breasted two button gray wool flannel suit with four patch pockets. The jacket features long rolled hand pick lapels and may be worn as a separate sports coat with other trousers. With it he wears a Hawaiian print shirt in blue and white. The suit is by Timely Clothes and the shirt by Palmdale and both are sold at Lake's Men's store in a wide variety of sizes. Nation at Glance (Continued from Page 1) sage, looked for a spot in the program to bring the bill up today. Yet some rumblings of opposition rolled up. They were directed not against Marshall as an individual, nor against his qualifications, but against making an exception even for him. Some lawmakers said, too, it is strange that among 150,000,000 Americans there isn't somebody with enough stature for the job, without drafting a man who already has served as soldier and statesman and earned the right to retire. NEW YORK — The Big Three foreign ministers drove toward basic decisions on Western German political and security problems today, with apparently good prospects of agreement on these points: 1. The United States, Britain and France should take practical measures as rapidly as possible to end the state of war which still exists between them and the West German government. 2. Germany should be given a larger, more mobile and better equipped police force to meet the communist challenge of international subversion and sabotage. 3. West German security against ouright red aggression continues to be primarily a responsibility of the three occupation powers but at some future time provision must be made for the Germans to share this responsibility. the specific proposal the German military units should be formed as part of a unified western defense force, some diplomats believe no firm decision may be made for the time being. MIAMI, Fla., (T)—A dozen men were under arrest today in what the FBI described as an attempted $2,000,000 international lottery. Medical Men (Continued From Page 1) the citizens of the area be urged to exert all efforts to complete and secure early utilization of these sanitary facilities. A. H. Wightman, M. D., President. To vote next Monday on the bond issue to make possible the construction of the new Magnolia Trunk sewer line are citizens of Anaheim, Fullerton, La Habra, Placentia, Garden Grove, Buena Park and Orange. Authorities, including Dr. Edward Lee Russell, county health officer; Chester G. Gillespie, consulting engineer; Nelson Launer, manager of JOS, and other engineers and civic leaders, have been stressing to the cities and communities the dire need for the new sewer line. All have been pointing out that the line presently being used is woefully inadequate to carry the load being placed on it. They have declared that without the proposed Magnolia Trunk line there will be little progress, prosperity or growth. Dr. Russell, backed by the State Department of Health, has stressed the need from a health standpoint, since manholes throughout the area are bolted down to keep overloaded sewerage lines from overflowing into the streets. Already, city fathers have related, many industries have had to be turned away since adequate sewerage facilities were not available. With the new line, they say, an open road for future growth, health and prosperity is assured. Weather Breaks Summer Records WASHINGTON (P) — Hot and cold temperatures are expected this week. the specific proposal the German military units should be formed as part of a unified western defense force, some diplomats believe no firm decision may be made for the time being. MIAMI, Fla., (T)—A dozen men were under arrest today in what the FBI described as an attempted 2,000,000 international lottery ring. They were picked up in a series of quick raids throughout the country following a tip from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Edmund Mason, special agent in charge of the Miami FBI office, said the tip came when the mounties picked up a taxi driver carrying lottery tickets across the Canadian-American border. The FBI office at Buffalo, N.Y., traced the tickets to Miami, Mason said, and agents here traced them to the Franklin Press, a commercial printing concern. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who announced the arrests in Washington, said the men would be charged with conspiracy to violate the federal law against interstate transportation of lottery tickets. The maximum penalty is a $10,000 fine and five years imprisonment. PRESBYTERIAN ELECT DR. O. SCOTT McFARLAND LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dr. O. Scott McFarland, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, Santa Ana, is the new stated clerk of the Los Angeles Presbytery. Elected yesterday at a Presbytery meeting in Pacific Palisades, Dr. McFarland succeeds Dr. Thomas Holden, who resigned to become executive secretary of the Church's Synod of California. Korean War (Continued from Page 1) emplacements and airstrips were disclosed by the Navy Thursday. Allied Ground Forces either held firm or gained on the beachhead perimeter 150 miles to the southeast. Particularly active was the northern front—from the northwest corner before Taegu to points north of the Taegu-Kyongju highway eastward. The U. S. First Cavalry Division seized three heights north of Taegu. Comparatively small-scale fighting flared on the southern front. But the Navy was in the spotlight. On the east coast, an American battleship cruised up and down the Sea of Japan off Pohang port. One of its three escorting destroyers whipped into the red-held harbor and exchanged fire with shore batteries. Attention was focused on the west coast by the two-day Naval asasult, however. Islands flanking Inchon have been seized by South Korean commandos—both for harassing the reds' seaborne supply and to prepare for a possible offensive.
