For Results, Quick Page 7 Anaheim Gazette, Monday, August 21, 1950 Southland Valencia Shipping Season Reaches Midway Point The Southern California Valencia shipping season reached the half-way point during the week ending August 19. Sales for the week were almost identical to the previous seven day period, the f.o.b., average showing a decline of about 10 cents a box. Shippers are generally making every effort to divert a greater volume of unattractive quality fruit into products channels where there is promise of a better return on this type fruit. The unrestricted movement of 288s and larger Southern California Valencias continues in effect during the week beginning August 20. Extremely heavy competition from the peak level volume of deciduous fruits and local melons continues without let-up. In some markets, the ratio of urloads of the competitive items to fresh oranges has been as high as 9 to 1. With the support of all leading retail outlets, a nation-wide sale on Valencia oranges was launched this week which is expected to help stimulate consumer demand for fresh oranges. Under more favorable weather conditions in some parts of the country and with lighter supplies, demand for California lemons showed a change for the better during the week ending August 19. Returns on good quality fruit in larger sizes improved steadily but off-quality and condition fruit in smaller sizes continued at a low level. Total sales were about 25 cars less while the f.o.b., averages was slightly above that of the previous week. Prorate on lemons for the week beginning August 20 was set at 300 cars, up 50 cars over this week. SEEK ESTATE Mrs. Antonio C.
