Anaheim Y Campers Approach Close of Summer Outings Add more Anaheim camping activities. This time it's the YMCA campers that occupy the outdoor spotlight. More than 400 campers from Anaheim have already gone through 8-10 day periods at Camp Osceola, the Orange County YMCA Camp in the San Bernardino Mountains, and still more are in prospect before the summer has run its course. Latest group to wind up at the Barton Flats camp returned to Anaheim last week. They included boys in the 11 year age bracket. Returning after a week as Mayor of Camp Osceola, was Stephen Morris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arval Morris, 1400 E. Santa Ana st. Highest Officer To Stephen, as the highest elected administrative officer in the camp, fell the task of running the camp according to set standards. He chairmaned the program and government commission which saw to it that camp rules were adhered to and that camp policies were developed and carried out. And according to YMCA Secretary Tommy Thomason, he functioned well as head administrator for the affairs of the 96 boys who spent the week in the mountains. "Stephen did a wonderful job as camp Mayor," Thomason said. Looking on while his son performed executive duties was Arval Morris, signed on as a counselor for the week. Morris started his counseling activities 25 years ago at Camp Osceola. Counselors Camp officials draw adults and high schoolers to fill counseling posts at Osceola. What goes on at camp is summed up in the designated commissions on which campers serve. There are eight of the administrative groups, embracing all of the camp routine. They are campfire, worship, program and government, athletics, horseback riding and hikes, raggers, service and newspaper. Under the camp setup, each camper belongs to one commission and in such capacity contributes to the furtherance of the program. Anaheimers first hit Camp Osceola this summer on June 17. As of last week, camptime for younger vacationers drew to a close for 1950. Yet to make the trip to Barton Flats are older campers, members of Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y groups in Anaheim, who will attend officers camp. First group is scheduled to arrive at Osceola on August 30. It will be replaced by another, bringing the total to 35 or 40 after three or four days. A similar number of family campers will round out the Anaheim quota for the year. They will return home on September 5. Acting on the recommendation of its Finance Committee, headed by Director Herman Nelson of Glendale and Controller A. W. McKinlay, the Board voted to reduce their 1949-50 to rate of 34 cents per $100 of assessed valuation to 31 cents. This amounts to a reduction of almost 10 per cent, it was pointed out. Of the 31 cents tax rate, Controller McKinlay stated, 26 cents will be used to meet interest and principal payments on outstanding Colorado River aqueduct bonds that were sold to finance the construction of the giant water supply system. The remaining 5 cents will be used to help pay operation and maintenance expenses and meet outstanding obligations with the federal government. Chairman Jensen stated that the 3 cents tax reduction was ordered by the board despite the fact that the District's payments to amortize outstanding Colorado river aqueduct bonds will be considerably increased during the next year as compared to the current year. There will also be additional expenses on account of office and field engineering work on a program of extending the aqueduct distribution lines to member areas and to other sections that Cops to Get Tough With Speeding Bus And Truck Drivers The California State Public Utilities commission has issued a warning that it is going to get tough with operators of speeding buses and trucks. The stern notice was handed down in a 98 page report issued by the commission yesterday covering all phases of highway safety and making recommendations to the state legislature. Within 60 days, the report said, the PUC will launch a policy to bring proceedings to cancel operative rights of commercial carriers found to be consistently violating the speed and safety laws. Investigators, continued the report, found that in a one month period check, buses were observed exceeding the prima facie speed limit on 44 occasions. Sixteen of these, it said, were doing 70 miles in a 55 mile zone. The report said that despite safety programs being carried on by the transportation industry, there still are many violations. It asked industry to take more steps to halt this. The commission recommended that trucks be equipped with instruments which make a permanent chart record of speeds and traveling time. Chairman Jensen stated that the 3 cents tax reduction was ordered by the board despite the fact that the District's payments to amortize outstanding Colorado river aqueduct bonds will be considerably increased during the next year as compared to the current year. There will also be additional expenses on account of office and field engineering work on a program of extending the aqueduct distribution lines to member areas and to other sections that are expected to be annexed to the Metropolitan Water District during the coming year. Factors which help to make possible the reduction of the Metropolitan Water District's tax rate include increasing revenues from the sale of Colorado River water and an increase in the assessed valuation of property within the District. Covering an area of about 910 square miles and including 28 incorporated cities and much unincorporated territory, the Metropolitan Water District now has an assessed valuation of $4,281,000,-000 and a population of 3,350,000, Chairman Jensen stated. Anaheim Bloomers Smash Fullerton The Anaheim Bloomers made it two in a row Friday night when they blasted Fullerton 13-4, principally on a seven-run outburst in the second inning. A walk, two errors, singles by Mary Lou Gastelum, Kay Truner, JoAnn Clark, and Mary Dargartz, and a triple by Barbara Gordon accounted for the splurge. Clark collected three other hits during the game, one a home run. Gastelum and Dee Ames pitched two-hit ball, each allowing Fullerton a single safety.
