For Results, Quick Page 7 Anaheim Gazette, Friday, August 11, 1950 VA Survey Determines Number Of Trained Veterans Available America now has a good-sized reservoir of veterans trained under the GI Bill in skills and trades that would be essential in time of war, Veterans Administration disclosed today. A VA survey provides some indication of the size and scope of this army of trained ex-servicemen. The survey covered only veterans actually in classrooms and at training benches. For every man then in training, VA estimated at least two others had either completed or discontinued their GI Bill courses. At the time of the survey—the end of October 1949—veteran enrollees included 735,000 in colleges and universities; 808,000 in trade, industrial and other schools below the college level; 304,000 in institutional on-farm training, and 285,000 in on-the-job training courses. Thirteen per cent of the college students, or more than 100,000 were studying engineering. Most popular courses were general engineering, electrical including radio and television) and mechanical—in that order. Another six per cent, on nearly 46,000 were enrolled in medical and related courses. And five per yourself a hopeless old maid at 28? Why, that is a woman's most attractive age and the one in which she is most likely to make a good marriage, if she doesn't get in a panic and lose her head and grab the first man she can get her hands on for fear she won't get one at all. Hal Boyle (Continued from Page 4) bed several prisoners and penetrated some thousands of yards beyond. Then it was caught in heavy fire from 200 or more red troops dug into positions on two hils. As the patrol began to withdraw with its prisoners, Pvt. Jack stayed behind to protect its flank with his M-1 rifle. As he limped back he went down. Sgt. Fred Mills of New Braunfeld, Tex., went back to get him. He dragged Pvt. Jack some 800 yards through sniper rifle, machinegun and mortar fire, loaded him on an abandoned peasant oxcart, and pulled the cart down the road until it collapsed. Then Sgt. Mills and two other Thirteen per cent of the college students, or more than 100,000 were studying engineering. Most popular courses were general engineering, electrical including radio and television) and mechanical—in that order. Another six per cent, on nearly 46,000 were enrolled in medical and related courses. And five per cent, or 42,000, were taking courses in the physical and natural sciences, such as physics, meteorology, geology and the like. Of the below-college-level group, the study revealed nearly 111,000 veterans were taking mechanical courses. Nearly three-fourths of them, or 80,000 were studying automobile mechanics; 11,000 were training as diesel and gas engine mechanics; more than 7000 as aircraft mechanics, and the remainder, other forms of mechanics. Radio and other communications courses ranked second with veterans training below college. At the time of the survey, 11 per cent, or 89,000, were enrolled in courses such as radio and television mechanics, aircraft radio, telegraph and telephone maintenance, and so on. Another five per cent, or 45,000, were taking courses in engineering subjects; 30,000, or four per cent, in flight training; 21,000, or two per cent in electricity, and 21,000, also two per cent, in metal work. Of those taking on-the-job training under the GI Bill, 18 per cent, or 53,000, were taking mechanics' and repair men's courses of one kind or another—chiefly automotive mechanics. Twelve per cent, or 33,000, were in training in the construction trades; nine per cent, or 26,000, were training as metalworkers; five per cent, in communications occupations, and four per ent as electricians. In addition to this reservoir of veterans training in occupations directly related to war and defense, the bulk of all GI Bill enrolees have trained for jobs which would be useful to a nation in mobilizing its resources for emergency purposes. Mills and two other members of the patrol—Cpl. Oscar L. Ellis of Sharpsburg, Ky., and Pvt. Gerald Coolridge of Hopewell, Pa.—carried the wounded boy the rest of the way to the river on the wooden bed of the oxcart. Knowing Pvt. Jack could not swim. Sgt. Mills chowed the rough wooden litter bearing his dying comrade out into the Makong river and pushing it before him paddled out to a waiting engineer's boat. The boat took them to the other side. There Pvt. Jack was given emergency treatment. But he died within 20 minutes. That is the story of the death of Pvt. Jack—just one of many who have died bravely in the last five weeks of heart breaking retreats. Free Square Dance Set for White Barn The well-known Beeman family will provide the music at the big free square dance to be held from 2:00 to 5:00 tomorrow afternoon at the White Barn auction center on Highway 101 between Anaheim and Santa Ana, program officials disclosed yesterday. Formerly with the bands of Kay Kyser, Hal Horton, and the National Barn Dance radio program, the Beemans have gained fame as one of the top Western musical groups in the nation. They have toured the country to give hundreds of performances including benefits for war charities and wounded war veterans. Recently they have played for square dances throughout Southern California, and are recognized as tops in their field. Many a girl who has good looks and intelligence, is passed over by the men in her community just because they have looked at her so long they no longer see her. She is just Mary or Sally or Jane with whom they went to school and who is of no more heart interest to them than their sisters. Men Interested in Stranger You will have observed, when a strange girl comes to town, how all the boys flock around her. Take a tip and be a stranger yourself. Go somewhere where the men will view you with appraising eyes because they have never seen you before and hence can see how well you stack up. Go where your old bag of tricks will all be new stunts and the chances are ten to one that you will make a good catch. It is not without reason that so many girls marry away from home. In your particular case I especially advise an emigration to foreign parts, because your family has got on your nerves and you have got green with jealousy over your sisters having been chosen while you were left. When such a situation arises, the only decent solution of it is for the family to part. Together they fight like cats and dogs and can see nothing but one another's faults. Separated, they are filled with affection for each other and perceive each other's good points. But, my dear girl, am going on the orgy of self-pity in which you are indulging; you have lost all sight of proportion. What makes you, in the first place, consider...
