For Results, Quick A Nurserymen say... by Orange County Nurserymen's Association Rather surprisingly few people realize the possibilities in their lawn clippings and leaves from their shade trees and shrubs. As badly as our soils need humus material it is a mistake to set these things out for the trash collector. A properly made and maintained compost heap is the logical answer to this problem. Garden soil constantly tiled loses its humus and becomes hard and compact unless humus making materials are added frequently. One can buy mixtures, chemical fertilizers, and soil conditioners but even these have more effect if plenty of humus is present in the soil. If space is limited, as it usually is in our gardens, a wire enclosure using redwood grape stakes can easily be set up to hold the refuse. Ordinary chicken wire netting is good. Decay of coarse woody stems is too slow so it is better to leave them out too. After about six inches of weeds, leaves, etc., have been put down, wet the mass thoroughly and cover it with an inch or two of soil. Sprinkle 1½ to 2 pounds of a balanced commercial plant food on each layer. This is to provide the extra nitrogen needed by the bacteria working on the refuse. All this plant food is grown available. $90,000 Bond Issue Carried At Centralla Carried by a heavy 4 to 1 majority—a $90,000 school bond issue got stamp of approval of voters of the Centralia school last Friday. Issuance of the bonds will allow the construction of four new classrooms, purchase of a new bus and additional playground, and installation of a fence. The new unit should be ready for occupancy by the opening of school next year, according to Principal Glen Dysinger. The present Centralia school, 7341 E. Lincoln, was erected in 1936 when pupil enrollment totalled 80. Last year's attendance was set at 216. Frank Meredith Funeral Service Set for Temerrow Funeral services for Frank Meredith, 82, resident of Anaheim since 1906, will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars chapel. He died Sunday. Born in West Virginia, Meredith is a veteran citrus grower in the Anaheim area. He has made his home at 10852 E. Lincoln. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Services tomorrow will be handled by the Rev. John K. Saville of the Episcopal church. Interment will follow. Stanley Spicer Sho FFA Initiative on Stanley Spicer, 10672 S. Hanson, has the initiative and self reliance typical of Anaheim high school's ambitious group of Future Farmers of America. A sophomore this past year, Stanley bought his sow as a gift from the school farm last year. He showed her at the Orange After about six inches of weeds, leaves, etc., have been put down, wet the mass thoroughly and cover it with an inch or two of soil. Sprinkle 1½ to 2 pounds of a balanced commercial plant food on each layer. This is to provide the extra nitrogen needed by the bacteria working on the refuse. All this plant food is again available for plants after the bacteria have done their work. Two piles are best, as the material put in one may be used while the other is being built. Approximately a year is needed for most leaves to decay to good compost. Some, such as pine and cedar needles and Eucalyptus and pepper tree leaves, which have a high resinous content, will require two or more years, but make an excellent compost in the end. The popular notion that these leaves will harm the soil and cannot be used as compost has been proven wrong. In fact, Eucalyptus mold has given better results in some cases than the popular oak leaf mold. Always keep the top of the heap somewhat saucer-shaped to catch rain water and wet the pile occasionally during the dry season. This is necessary to insure full activity of organisms which are living in the pile and therefore quick decomposition. Photo Club Sets Meeting Tomorrow Richard Walters, technical adviser for Defender Division of the Dupont Company will discuss Varigam printing paper at a meeting of the Orange county Camera club tomorrow night in the basement of the Episcopal church, 7th and Bush, Santa Ana. Meeting time is 8 p.m. All photography fans are cordially invited to attend, says H. S. Hams, club president. On August 9, an open meeting will feature David Persons, head of the Eastman color processing laboratory. Persons will discuss color processing of 8-16 mm movies. Meeting time and place are the same. Sponsor is the Orange county Home Movie club. Funeral services for Frank Meredith, 82, resident of Anaheim since 1806, will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars chapel. Young, 14, of Los Angeles, died in Fullerton Cottage hospital late Sunday afternoon five hours after he was accidently shot with a .22 calibre rifle being carried by his hunting companion, Eban Neal, 17, of Olinda. The Young family were visiting at the Neal ranch home and the two boys had gone hunting into nearby Carbon Canyon. They were walking side by side, the Neal boy carrying the rifle in the crook of his arm when it was accidentally discharged. The bullet entered Richard's elbow, ranged into his side, and severed a heart artery. Fathers of the two boys hurried the wounded lad to the hospital where death took place. The body was taken to a Fullerton mortuary. Quick Action Use the Anal LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Anaheim Gazette July 3, 10, 17 and 24, 1950.) Day Spicer Shows Typical Initiative on Project Spicer, 10672 S. Hanson, initiative and self reliance of Anaheim high school farm last year. Her at the Orange last year and won a with her. This year he saw one of the gilts that died by his sow. Now has two litters a gilt can be bred after months. Stanley feels well on the way to enterprise by keeping in each litter. Project has been relatively inexpensive. A water hole, to keep his hogs cool, and a hog pen, made of old boards and barrel slats, cost nothing. And he has plenty of room for expansion, since his dad has three acres of extra land he is not using and would make good hog pasture. Besides his project, Stanley takes an active part in the other activities of the Future Farmers of America. Last year he was on the dairy judging team and represented the chapter on many occasions. He also worked out with the milk judging team. Next year he will hold the office of sentinel in the chapter.
