Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER HOME FRONT — ANAHEIM'S Tom Hoag is a prophet without honor in his own home town. He has developed a complete disaster setup for ANAHEIM or any other city but he can't interest any of the city officials in giving it the consideration it deserves... Cuba Morris, a recent, but defeated candidate for sheriff, was going to use the Hoag disaster set-up if elected... T. N. (Brick) Gaines even made a complete outline of it and had it in working order... "Disasters can't be predicted," Hoag, a native of Anaheim said. He went through the near disasters of 1938—the earthquake that rocked Southern California, and the flood of 1937... E. M. Quinn, the ANAHEIM plumber, is suing Police Chief Mark Stephenson claiming that a city plumbing license was refused him... Carol Ruth Gentry is one of 650 students at Occidental college's summer session... Freddie King, the milkman, says it's a pleasure doing business with ANAHEIMERS... There was a lot of action at La Palma park yesterday as the Fullerton Legion Juniors beat San Diego to take the Fifth Area Finals, 9-8. PROFILES—Men like Charlie Pearson deserve a lot of credit. Serving as mayor of a thriving city of nearly 15,000 requires considerable time that might otherwise be devoted to promoting business interests. It is because of such unselfish, public spirited men like Charlie Pearson that ANAHEIM is the progressive community it is today: PROFILES—Men like Charlie Pearson deserve a lot of credit. MEMORY LANE — Al Kohler was one of the sparkling stars of the ANAHEIM Valencias—the wonder softball team of the era. Burt Kidd was the best punter in his day. His left-footed kicks were breathtaking. George Hobbs started his coaching career in ANAHEIM. A man of vision, he used progressive ideas and had his ANAHEIM teams fighting for championship after championship. Remember how Dick Glover used to show up his ANAHEIM varsity by taking the ball and showing them how to do it. Bill Cook and Al Clayes were two of ANAHEIM'S best in the 1920's. Clayes was a potential all-American on the gridiron and almost a Charlie Peddock on the track. Billy Feistner, the Long Beach oil man spent a lot of money in ANAHEIM, building—or rebuilding—a softball empire. Howard Spencer remembers the "good old days" when Walter Johnson pitched for Olinda here in ANAHEIM. Those games at the turn of the century drew three to five thousand fans who horse-and-buggied here from "way 'round." There aren't many who remember ANAHEIM'S great mail robbery of the 1920's when several prominent citizens landed in Leavenworth. $22,000's worth of plunder was taken from ANAHEIM mails. CONGRATULATIONS — To all the Soap Box Derby kids—Their achievements are a credit to the ingenuity and skill of ANAHEIM youth. REMEMBER — Think before you speak; often things that are said would be best left unsaid. The Pageant—a series of tableaux with townspeople acting as living models, reproducing famous paintings and sculptural works on a picture frame stage—this year includes 66 works of art to be recreated in three different programs on successive nights. Each evening's performance is traditionally closed with Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper." The program is as follows: "The Pearl Necklace" by Vermeer; "Perseus" by Cellini; "Luncheon of Boating Party" by Renoir; "Lot and His Family" by Rubens; "Family Portrait" by Jordans; "Honorable Mrs. Graham" by Gainsborough; "Creation of Adam" by Michelangelo; "Going to Work" by Millet; "Portrait" by Dali; "Eight Bells" by Homer; "The Lomellino Family" by VanDyke; "Enrollment Day" by Rockwell; and "Madonna of Humility" by Fra Angelico. If caught in the open by an approaching tornado, experts advise you to run, not walk, at right angles to its path. You may be able to get out of the way. LCO REFRIGER you a TRUE ZER EEZER ...
