For Results, Quick A Page 7 Anaheim Gazette, Friday, July 21, 1950 Young FFA Poultryman Begins Basis of Large Scale Operation Personal Mention (Continued from Page 3) on their trip and pictures taken on Mr. and Mrs. William Prestons' honeymoon trip, Mrs. Cariker was presented with a large birthday cake and refreshments were served. Mrs. John Ganahl, 415 Leonora st., arrived home from Fullerton General hospital Tuesday with Mary Catherine, who was born July 13. Mary Catherine has three brothers, Don, Peter, and Andrew. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Ganahl well-known residents of this city. Paul Omar Stillwell of the Los Alamitos Naval Air station and Rubye Mildred Chaffin of Ft. Smith, Ark., recently were issued a license to wed. Mrs. Jeanie Larson of 551 S. Lemon celebrates her birthday today. Mrs. Walter A. Luce of 931 N. Lemon, was hostess yesterday to her niece, Mrs. Burton Pitts of Arcadia and Mrs. Marta Wents of Long Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Franzen have moved from 210 N. Claundra. Rodger DeMille, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rowland DeMille of 7911 Liberty Lane, is well along the road to becoming a fullscale commercial poultryman—even though he's only a sophomore at AUHS. Another Anaheim area youth launched into a profitable and educational vocation by the Future Farmers of America program of the school, Rodger has already learned enough about the care and feeding of poultry that he has 101 chicks left out of 100 he started with in a recent project. (Hatcheries usually give 4 extra per 100). According to high school agricultural instructors, who have guided him in the creation of his poultry project, the success of his venture to date lies largely in his attention to a good balanced diet, careful management and use of a sunshine brooder. Rodger started in the poultry business early this spring, after watching his parents successfully operate their own poultry enterprise for a year. Under guidance of his parents and instructors, he has learned that raising his birds on wire is better for disease control. He also has learned how to vaccinate birds for smallpox and how to caponize roosters. He knows that he can produce good meat birds of from 4 to 8 pounds, even though he has purchased straight-run chicks by "TRUTH" WILL BE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE TOPIC "God shall send forth his mercy and his truth." This declaration from Psalms is the Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Truth" in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Beston. The Bible Lesson will include one of Jesus' parables as given in Matthew's Gospel: "Whosoever hearth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: . . . And every one that hearth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it." "We can not build safely on false foundations," writes Mary Baker Eddy, in a correlative passage from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Again she says, "The best sermon ever preached is Truth practised and demonstrated by the destruction of sin, sickness, and death." Mr. and Mrs. Harold Franzen have moved from 210 N. Claudina st., to 121 E. Alberta. Lois Mae Casebeer of 328 W. Broadway, will be honored on her birthday at a beach party tonight in the Huntington Beach State park. Attending will be Linda Hall, Linda Woodrum, Mr. and Mrs. George Watts, Jr., and daughters, Georgianne and Marilyn and the honoree's parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Albert J. Casebeer. The Orange county branch of National Fuschia society will have a potluck dinner Tuesday, July 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the American Legion hall. 1936 N. Lemon st. Those attending are requested to bring their own table service, and a salad, vegetable or dessert. Visitors are welcome to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Byrnes, their daughter Miss Audrey Byrnes and Mrs. Carl Illig of Houston, Tex., visited Anaheim Sunday as the guests of Mrs. Henry Kuchel and family. They came west stopping at Salt Lake City, Utah, Reno; Nev., San Francisco and on to Los Angeles. They are now en route home by way of the Grand Canyon. Home-Makers Forum (Continued from Page 3) It is ready now. Stop in at Garey's and look it over. Several readers have sent in questions about the Orange county fair. Mrs. M. S.: Glass containers for the canned goods you enter should be of standard size. Do not use old mayonnaise or coffee jars. Label your entry with the name of the product, the year and the class number. Put your name on the bottom of the jar. Neatness of the labeling counts in the judging. Mrs. L. B.: There is a class especially for Spanish foods. He knows that he can produce good meat birds of from 4 to 8 pounds, even though he has purchased straight-run chicks by caponizing his roosters. Rodger, who will serve as reporter for the local FFA next year, started out raising rabbits but finds chickens more to his liking. With such outstanding success thus far, agricultural instructors are betting on Rodger as a future outstanding poultryman. Home Building In May Tops Previous High Builders and developers in Orange and Los Angeles counties started 11,740 new permanent dwelling units in May. Labor Department statistics disclosed today. This tops all previous marks for the counties, the previous peak being last April, 11,620 units. Reports from building permit offices throughout the two-county area showed that permits were issued in May for 10,179 units, about the same as for the previous month. This continuing high level of authorizations was another indication that house building held to high levels through June. Large projects continued to feature local construction, with 50 large developments of one family homes accounting for over half of all units authorized during the month. The largest development of the month was the 1139 unit addition to an existing project in the Lakewood area. Six other large tracts in the Bellflower district of Los Angeles county totalled over 1100 units; and nine tracts with a total of 879 units were authorized in the county's Whitier district. The Van Nuys district of the City of Los Angeles authorized six projects with 816 units and the Downey district in Los Angeles county had three developments totaling 272 units. Other large projects included a 141 home development in Manhattan Beach, two projects totaling 90 units in Anaheim, and two de- EMPLOYMENT Situations Wanted—M & F. Here is the recipe for peachy cobbler which I promised you yesterday: PEACHY COBBLER Fruit Part: 3 cups sliced fresh peaches ½ teaspoon allspice 2 tablespoons margarine ½ cup sugar Batter: 1 cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons shortening ½ cup milk Slice peaches into a greased baking dish and add sugar, spice and olomargarine cut in pieces. To make the batter: sift flour, salt, baking powder and sugar. Cut in the shortening as for biscuits and then stir in milk to make a soft dough. Spread over the peaches and bake at 425 degrees for about 30 minutes. Serve warm with top milk or whipped cream. BOWRON RECALL ACTION LOS ANGELES (AP)—The Mayor Bowron recall petition is still alive today. The District Court of Appeal issued specific instructions yesterday to City Clerk Walter Peterson for recounting 44,000 signatures on the petition. The ruling was the court's reaction to a request from petition circulators that Peterson be cited for contempt for his alleged failure to comply with a previous recount order.
