Gussie Defeats South African LONDON (P)—Gertrude Moran is warming up handily in her quest of the Wimbledon crown, her most recent victim being Mrs. Sheila Dowdeswell of Kenya, South Africa. The Santa Monica racquet queen won her first round match yesterday in the Kent Open lawn tennis championships, a Wimbledon tuneup. She whipped Mrs. Dowdeswell 6-2, 6-2。 CROWNED 'MISS CALIFORNIA'—Joanne Durant, 21, of San Diego (left center), is crowned "Miss California" at Santa Cruz, Calif., by Jone Pedersen, last year's title holder. Miss Durant won the title eight months after she moved to San Diego from Wichita, Kans., where she was runner-up in last year's "Miss Kansas" contest. Janice Sutter, 18 (seated, left), placed third as "Miss Oakland" and Jeanne Cook, 18 (right), as "Miss Los Angeles," placed second. GUSSY AGAIN — California's Gussy Morin, whose tennis costumes have managed to keep spectators' eyes off the ball in past tournaments, displays her first French-created tennis dress in her London hotel room. Gussy's latest outfit, designed for Wimbledon play later this month, is a Galmain creation of white silk calfion, completely pleated, with matching pleated bloomer-type panties. County Budget Faces Million Dollar Increase The Orange County Supervisory opened department budget studies this week—and looming right there on the books is the prospect of a $1,000,000 increase in the total budget. The hikes chiefly are in the Welfare department and the County hospital. With that bit of news, corresponding prospects of a boost to the tax rate became a hot topic of speculation in official circles. Some quarters predict that the present county tax rate will be $9 per $100 of assessed property valuation, the lowest county rate the state, and the only county under $1 this year, will not be creased. The higher budget may be set by increase in the total county assessed valuation, due to rapid growth and improvements. TRANSFER DELAYED—Harry Gold (left), accused of relaying atomic bomb information to Russia, keeps eyes downcast as he is brought before a Federal judge at Philadelphia who delayed his transfer to New York for trial for an indefinite time. The 1950 preliminary census figure is 47,876. NOW AT ROOSEVELT WESTBURY, N. Y. Fight Wages Over Rent Control Bill (Continued from page 1) gram to make rent control, a fixed policy" of government. In reply Democratic leader MeCormack (Mass.), said communities have the right to determine whether they want controls. He called that a "complete vecomtion of local self-government." Rep. Madden (D., Ind.), said the bill is necessary to prevent "unreasonable landlords" from charging exorbitant rents in areas of housing shortages. The bill, which would keep alive the last of the major wartime controls, on approximately 8,000, 000 dwelling units, mostly in big cities would work like this: 1. The federal rent control authority, due to expire June 30, would continue for a year. 2. But the controls would cease automatically in six months, on December 31, in all communities that before that date did not decide affirmatively, through a vote of the local governing body or a referendum of the citizens, to continue the rent ceilings on to June 30, 1951. 3. Any community could vote itself out from under controls any time before December 31. No com- Dorothy Dix (Continued from Page 3) would be for me to get a job. That would help my husband and relieve the tension we live under, but what about the baby? Will it be fair to leave her in the care of a maid? WORRIED Answer: I do not think that any mother should leave her children to the care of servants if she can possibly take care of them herself, but in a case of necessity such as yours seems to be, it may be the best thing to do. As long as she is a tiny baby you can leave her far better than you can later on. Then, when she is beginning to understand and to learn, she will need your influence and training, your hand to fashion her character, but while she is still in the cradle all she needs is physical care, which any reliable intelligent woman can give her. A MESSAGE FOR FATHER'S DAY With the approach of Father's Day, Dr. Timothy Brewer, a Hartford, Conn., heart specialist, gave an inspiring message for wives attending a women's club convention last week to pass on to their husbands. Men would live longer, he said, if they helped the little woman with the dinner dishes. Swirling 2. Any community could vote itself out from under controls any time before December 31. No community could restore controls after they were hited. Out out rounds of rich pastry with a cookie cutter. Put a little jam in the center of each and fold over co-edges neat; seal well and prick tops. These taste best when they are freshly baked. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Men would live longer, he said, if they helped the little woman with the dinner dishes. Swinging a dish rag and avoiding the after-dinner easy chair, he maintained, keeps down weight and delays hardening of the arteries. We could go the doctor a few better. Changing diapers is good exercise too. And there's nothing like welding a dust mop for building healthy muscles. Cooking is creative work and thus mentaly satisfying, and hanging out the wash gets a man outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine. Father will just go whole hog and take over completely at home, he can be as healthy as anything. Let the little woman go to the office and get ulcers.
