AFFAIRS OF STATE
BY EARL G. WATERS
SACRAMENTO (WNS)—One of the ablest and best liked members of the State Senate has been levated by the voters of his district to a Superior Court judgehip.
He is Senator Thomas F. Keating of San Rafael.
Keating, who will conclude his legislative service after 14 years, was first elected to the Senate in 1936 replacing Republican Senator Charles F. Reindollar who also had served 14 years.
Although he defeated Reindollar by only 26 votes, Keating was twice re-elected at the primaries, once without opposition.
A quiet unassuming man, Keating was both honest and intelligent during the years, through his services as a Senator, he made substantial contributions to good government.
As a Senator he displayed a remarkable sense of balance and his legislative record will stand for years as a splendid example of impartiality.
For no special interest group could lay claim to Keating as their champion yet his dealings with all who expressed interest in legislative proposals were fair and considerate and all expressed a high regard for his integrity and ability.
A Democrat, he supported labor when he believed the cause was right and had the courage to oppose the same with all other and few legislators can record of legislation so in interest and so freeination by any certain p.
In all his years in the ture no breath of scandal of motives, no supr influence was ever man nection with Keating.
He won the respect of bers of both Houses and the important committee Senate including the Rules committee which all other committees are eral establishes the p the Senate.
His retirement; while loss to the Senate and is regarded as an gain for the courts.

was the same with all other groups and few legislators can point to a record of legislation so diversified in interest and so free from domination by any certain pet subject.
In all his years in the legislature no breath of scandal, no question of motives, no suggestion of influence was ever made in connection with Keating.
He won the respect of the members of both Houses and served on the important committees of the Senate including the powerful Rules committee which appoints all other committees and in general establishes the policies of the Senate.
His retirement; while a great loss to the Senate and the state, is regarded as an outstanding gain for the courts.
TIME TO HIT THE ROAD
With the echo of the last clang of the school bell still ringing in the air, almost all America has focused its attention on the bright spot of the year—summer vacation.
It's time to hit the road and no matter where you go, chances are there'll be more offered for your vacation dollar than in many a year. From the mountains, the dude ranches, the seashore resorts and vacation towns, reports are rife that competition is intense, that vacationers will be able to pick and choose and enjoy better food and lodging no matter what the size of the vacation budget.
With that bit of cheering news, we wish a good old summertime to one and all.
