Civic Progress Week Begins May 8
(Continued from Page 1)
"Industrial Day," Tuesday, May 9, begins officially with a noon meeting at the Elks Club co-sponsored by the Anaheim Kiwanis Club, C. G. Gillespie, retired chief sanitary engineer of the state of California and present consulting engineer for the Orange County Joint Outfall Sewer System will speak on "The Importance of Sanitation to Industry."
Open house sessions are planned by KwiKset Locks, Inc., 516 East Santa Ana street and the Anaheim Citrus Fruit Association, 804 East Center Street.
"Industrial Day" chairman is J. B. Collings, chairman of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce Industrial Committee.
Early Start
"Retail Merchants Day," tabbed for Wednesday, May 10, will get an early start Tuesday night with a retail civic progress meeting at the Fremont Junior High School auditorium, beginning at 8 p.m. Speaker will be J. J. Stranahan, Counsellor in Public Relations for the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce, who will address the gathering with the subject, "The Future Belongs To Us." The meeting is designed especially for retail merchants and all their employees.
On Wednesday, May 10, retail merchants will offer goods at special prices, conduct a mothers contest and dispense free orange juice from temporary juice bars on city sirewalks between 2 and 3 p.m.
The mothers contest will result in awards for the youngest mother, the oldest mother and the mother with the largest family.
Panel Discussions
In addition to the evening program, "Community Planning Digest Thursday, May 11," will include a group of panel discussions, all under the general heading: "How effective is zoning can smaller cities, as well as large metropolitan cities, by it?" and "Does sound planning actually save tax dollars?"
At 10:15 the first panel discuss "Planned Shopping Centers and off-street parking sus after-thought, shoe-stringiness development." Posing problem will be Harry S. Anderson, general manager of Broadway Crenshaw store in Angeles, Charles D. Clark, planning consultant of Norris Clark, Los Angeles, will give planner's reply.

Following this last panel discussion,
the planners will adjourn until 7 p.m. when they re-assemble for the Community Planning Banquet.

and program chairman J. A. Mellen,
president of the Southern California planning congress.
Friday, May 12, will wind up Civic Progress Week with "Youth Recreation and Education Day."
Designed especially for P. T. A., youth and recreational and educational groups, the program features Arvid Pauley, California recreation specialist as speaker at a noon meeting at the Anaheim Elks Club. The meeting is co-sponsored by the Anaheim Elks Club.

The Independent Bankers Association of Southern California which lists the Southern County Bank of Anaheim as a member, featured Harry J. Harding, president of the First National Bank of Pleasanton and president of the Independent Bankers Association of the Twelfth Federal Reserve District, as principal speaker at the April dinner meeting of the group held in Los Angeles.
Harding told his listeners that the rules for banking success were much the same as those for any business or profession.
"There is no special formula or building a successful bank," he said. "Friendly, personal service to the needs of customers is as important today to a bank as it is to a merchant or any business or professional man dealing with the public."
