May 1-8 Set as Week to Repair Mail Boxes Noting that improperly erected rural mail boxes impair fast, efficient delivery of mail and expose delivered mail to bad weather, the Post Office department has designated the first week in May 1950 as National Rural Mail Box Improvement Week. During this period, the department encourages patrons of the rural delivery service to provide suitable receptacles for mail and to erect these receptacles in such manner that they will be readily accessible to the carrier and will, at the same time, present a neat appearance. The department suggests the following improvements to box owners: Names and road numbers of box owners should be visible to the carrier as he approaches the box. Boxes and their supports should be kept painted. Patrons who have unapproved boxes of top-opening, revolving-door or other types are not required to discard them, provided the boxes have been in use by the present owners for several years and provided they are maintained in good serviceable condition. Any non-standard boxes, which do not permit proper service by the carrier from his vehicle, or which do not provide adequate protection for the mail, should be replaced with boxes of the approved type. Boxes, regardless of type should be designed and conditioned so that there is no liklihood of the carrier injuring himself while deliveriing the mail.
