I enjoyed thoroughly the week I have just spent in the district. There is a stimulation in the youth and enthusiasm of the younger men and women who are working in the campaign, some of them for the first time, as there is in long standing friendships. A tide is moving, and like all movements, from hobbies to depression or prosperity, it is moving from east to west. There are indications in California. People now realize that all is not well in Washington, and they want to hear details from us who are close to the picture, and to express their own opinions. What are the people at home thinking about? Last December they did not want more taxes, and were concerned about the deficit. They now want the present taxes reduced, especially the excise taxes, and there is a realization of the connection between wasteful spending and deficits and taxes and eventual bankruptcy or devaluation. This is good. But a new note has come into the meetings. What, ask the people, is there to tell us about the stories now coming out of the state department? What about Hiss? What about red herrings? What about Joe McCarthy? These questions superceded the usual questions about farm policies, or strictly local issues. It was a quick trip, but a good one, and encouraging.
