Los Avenida OPEN SAT Marywood Latin Club Have Roman Banquet Surrounded by bright Roman atmosphere, the Marywood High School Latin Club dramatized the popular Roman Banquet last night. Invitations, written in Latin on many scrolls, had been issued by the patrician members of the club. The outdoor barbecue of the school was colorfully decorated with festoons of rich Roman stripes, under the able management of Mary Claire Helfrich. At the entrance was a small watch dog with the inscription: "Cave anem"—"Beware the Dog," commemorating the Roman custom of having a watchdog. Rosalind Stoffel and her faithful committee presented all guests with a number of quaint and artistic favors; such as Roman fasces, yields, standards, placecards, and venus. The sophomores who were still on probation, have begun their initiation by passing "under the yoke," acted as slaves throughout the banquet. The Latin students, appropriately attired in tunics and togas, reclined at table, according to the custom of the early Romans. Eating for the most part with their fingers necessitated frequent ablutions during the meal. Throughout the banquet a full chicken dinner organized by Gail Marie Nolan, the consul Jane Stehly, and the co-consul Mary Claire Helfrich, frequently called upon the slaves for entertainment in the form of Latin playlets songs and poems. The banquet was concluded by the "Manummission" of the slaves after their pledge of allegiance to the S.P.Q.R. Club. The consul and co-consul participated in the symbolic severing of the slave's chains. Think HE'S Strong and Handsome?
