County Closes Welfare Offices (Continued from page 1) with the county again taking over the welfare job, may leave the state with a financial headache, it will save the taxpayers some money in other ways, apparently. For instance, County Welfare Director Thomas P. Douglas, who left and locked the state building April 1, took only 24 of the 50 state employees with him. Nineteen of these 24 had been county employees before they were transferred to the state. Besides bringing these 19 back to the county, Douglas took five of the state employees along, to become county employees. “There were 50 employees in the state set-up, but we can do the same job with less than 30 employees,” Douglas explained. He also brought along a small portion of the office equipment for county use. The case load, under Proposition 4, which was repealed last November, jumped in this county from about 300 to 5500, Douglas said. It's Your Duty to Get Out and Vote on Tuesday, April 11. Musick Seeks Re-Election as County Sheriff In this connection, the Sheriff referred to the official annual examination of Orange county offices made by the 1949 Grand Jury. The Grand Jury concluded its official report regarding the sheriff's office by stating: "The conclusion reached at the termination of the investigation disclosed that the Sheriff's Office and County Jail are being administered in a competent, efficient and up-to-date manner. The cooperation between the Sheriff's Office and the other law enforcement agencies in the county is exceptionally good. We find the morale of the personnel of the office to be quite high." This report shows clearly that the sheriff's office has earned the approval of the people of Orange county. When Sheriff Musick was elected in 1946, he undertook certain definite obligations to give good law enforcement to the people of Orange county. These obligations have been faithfully performed. In announcing his candidacy, the sheriff promises the continued discharge of all the duties of the office, with strict adherence to the principle of maximum service to all at the lowest possible cost commensurate with good service. Sheriff Musick was reared in Orange county, educated in its schools and the University of Southern California, where he gained national recognition as an All-American football star. With the exception of the three years that he served with the United States Marines in the last war, he has been engaged in law enforcement work in Orange county since 1933. He is a member of various fraternal veteran and civic organizations, and resides with his wife and daughter at 1606 Louise street, Santa Ana. The fact that Sheriff Musick possesses outstanding qualifications for the office is evidenced by the approval of the voters in every part of the county. In the 1946 election, Sheriff Musick as one of six candidates received an overwhelming majority of votes, and he pledges that if he is retained in office, he will continue to serve the people as their sheriff and will consistently strive to justify the confidence placed in him.
