Within a few weeks after being wounded he was back in the trenches with the other doughboys. Officers gave him a good rating for being a sharp-shooter, since his sense of distance was extra good and his eyesight was keen and he had what his commanding officer called "a trigger finger." He served in the so-called "United Nations" in the American uniform. He has a staff sergeant when he was discharged, holding a job as superintendent of a food commissary supply. It was his duty to see that a large Army bakery was in running order and to attend to other food supplies for the entire front which was lined up in the Korosho mountains, where lies Lake Bled in Jugoslavia. While serving as an infantryman in the front trenches, no food could come through and the men nearly starved. One experience he had was when they were so weakened that the man next to him could not hear him speak, he was so weak. He used his entire strength to speak loud enough to be heard. While in the infantry, he was a machine gunner with his two brothers, Vick and Vince, Vince is his younger brother and he again served in World War II. He was captured by the Germans where he was held prisoner in a war camp for two years. Starvation was prevalent in these camps and Vince was extremely thin and was ill when he returned home. His brother, Vick was shot through the abdomen, the bullet then going on through his arm. Vick lives in New York City at present. New Floral Shop Opens in Stanton Anthony Gasnik of 8032 Main street in Stanton, has opened a new floral shop at that address. He has cut flowers for all occasions and asks the public to come and see his selection. He grows a lot of his flowers, thereby insuring good fresh stock. Mr. Gasnik is a veteran of World War I where he served three years, all of it in the front lines in the trenches, which, as we have all read and heard, was filled with water and ice to the knees. His candid opinion of war, as he experienced it, is a horrible thing. Hewitt said that every one of California's 58 counties will have an official delegation at the convention in the Fresno Memorial Auditorium. He said Orange county is entitled to send 103 delegates and alternates. Every Republican candidate for a major state office will attend the convention and address the delegates. The purpose is to give Republican party leaders throughout the state an opportunity to see, hear and meet the candidates in order to obtain a first-hand knowledge of their qualifications. The Orange county chairman pointed out that under the California primary election system the political parties do not hold nominating conventions, but it was decided to hold the Fresno convention this year to give Republican party candidates a sounding-board to kick-off the political campaigns. Hewitt said state Republican headquarters notified him that more than 1,000 delegates will attend the convention. 20-30 Club to Sponsor Spade Cooley May 29 At the regular meeting of the 20-30 Club last Monday evening when they met at Mothers Kitchen, the announcement was made that they would sponsor the appearance of Spade Cooley and His Western Varieties show here on May 29, Monday evening.
