Anaheim Extends Welcome
La Palma Park was the scene of an official welcome extended to the Sacramento Solons of the Pacific Coast league by city officials and businessmen of Anaheim last week. The Solons will spend another five weeks in spring training at the park and will break camp Thursday, March 23.
Highlighting the first week of training were the daily workouts of running, batting practice, and infield practice in addition to several intra-squad games. Few injuries have been reported to date and the Solons expect to field a top-conditioned eleven when they meet Portland at Anaheim Sunday, March 5.
Manager Red Kress' spring trainees at La Palma are at full strength except for three holdouts as of Tuesday, February 28. Len Ratto, shortstop, Pete Coscarart, second base, and pitcher Matt Surkont, here from the Chicago White Sox had not returned a signed contract.
Jim Tabor, popular slugging first baseman for the Solons has slimmed down to a trim 185 lbs., formerly weighing in at 205 lbs. Tabor is a former third baseman for the Boston Red Sox.
Floyd (Bill) Bevens, the only pitcher who came within one of pitching the only no-hit game in World Series history is in Anaheim training with the Sacramento Solons Here,

Floyd (Bill) Bevens, the only pitcher who came within one of pitching the only no-hit game in World Series history is in Anaheim training with the Sacramento Solons. After this episode Bevens' arm went dead and he had to drop out of baseball. All previous attempts to a comeback have failed and the Solons have talked him into trying again. He states that this is the last time, however.
Anaheim's "old favorite" Joe Marty will be in the outfield for the Solons again this year, according to Wayne Anderson. Marty is remembered for his homerun in the 1945 World Series.
Former Anaheim players Merle Frick and Glen Lierman, who have been with the Solons several years, are back again this year.
Those officials who extended the official welcome to the Solons were: Mayor Charles Pearson, Councilmen Oscar Heying and Robery Boney, Chief of Police Mark Stephenson, Judge B. P. Bonnat, Chamber of Commerce president, Warren Ashleigh, Oscar Solter, Ken Hellyer, Al Cotler, Clyde Nickel, Ernie Moeller, Dick Gay, Harry Pearson, Ralph Osborn, Richard Glaver and Don Derr.

Kellogg Ranch Horse Shows Resume Mar. 12
The famous Kellogg Arabian horse shows at the Kellogg Ranch near Pomona will be resumed March 12 under the management of the California State Polytechnic College, it was announced recently by Julian A. McPhee, president of the college.
The horse shows, regular Sunday attraction which drew more than 250,000 visitors to the beautifully landscaped ranch each year since 1925, came to a close on November 21, 1948, when the United States Department of Agriculture decreed that the ranch should be abandoned and the prize Arabians sold. The department of agriculture operated the ranch as the Pomona Remount Station for less than six months after taking over the 812-acre Arabian breeding farm from the U. S. Army. The Army had operated it as a remount station from 1943 to 1948.
Watch Red Cross Scoreboard Here
Keep your eye on the football scoreboard in front of the Anaheim Theater! The progress of the Red Cross drive will be recorded there, showing the day-by-day relationship of the amount subscribed to the $7,600 quota for our city.

Anaheimers gave freely of their blood last week when the Mobile unit was at KwiKset. Ninety pints were given—a considerable amount more than was expected.

Ray Adkinson of Laguna Beach, census superintendent of Orange, Riverside and Imperial counties, was at the county headquarters in Santa Ana on Wednesday of this week. He announced that preliminary organization work is practically completed and actual taking of the census will start April 1 and should be completed within several weeks. He has no definite information on this point but he believes the census bureau probably will release the census figures for the various communities as soon as they are compiled.

Co. Courthouse Has Option on Adjacent Land
County supervisors are understood to be considering the acquisition of an option upon two more residence and office properties along the west side of Broadway, opposite the courthouse and adjacent to the courthouse annex site. Both properties belong to Dr. Karl A. Loerch, one being vacant and the other housing his offices. Net price paid under a two-year option would be $65,000.
Under reported terms of the option, the county would rent the vacant building at 626 N. Broadway for two years at $150 per month, the $3,600 total to apply against the purchase price at the end of two years. Dr. Loerch would continue to occupy his office building at 632 N. Broadway, and at the end of two years, when purchase was made under the option, he would pay the county $1,500 for the building and move it away.
Appraisers Goode and Goode, employed by the county, estimated that would represent a net price of $45,000 for 626 N. Broadway and $30,000 for the land at 632 N. Broadway.
The property, together with other frontage now owned by the county as far north as Eighth street, is involved in contemplated plant for building a new court-souse group.

Freeway Project Bids Authorized
Santa Ana Freeway development passed through another stage last week when the state division of highways was authorized by C. H. Percell, state director of public works, to advertise for bids on the project. Bidding on another road project in the county was authorized.
The Freeway improvement may cost an estimated $386,000 for work on the Manchester boulevard approach from Euclid avenue to the "Y" intersection of Highway 101 south of here.
Two miles of coast highway at San Clemente will also be resurfaced at an estimated cost of $68,-100.
Buena Park to Euclid avenue, which is five miles long, and will new three mile stretch will involve widening of the three-lane roadway to four lanes with a dividing strip in the middle.
The state has almost completed the acquisition of rights-of-way in the Santa Ana area, but the time for extending the route through this district has not been stated.
Anaheim merchants invite you.
