Will Dedicate New Research Center at Brea The Union Oil Company of California will conduct ground breaking ceremonies for the new $5,000,000.00 Research Center at Brea Tuesday, January 17, President Reese H. Taylor announced today. Ceremonies will commence at 3:00 p.m. at the intersection of Imperial Highway and Valencia avenue. Principal speakers will include W. L. Stewart, Jr., Union Oil Executive Vice-President; Willis H. Warner, Chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors; and Mr. C. E. Swift, Union Oil Vice-President in charge of Research, Development and Patents. The ceremonies will highlight Union Oil's 60th Anniversary Year celebrations. More than 500 persons from Los Angeles and Orange counties are scheduled to attend. The Research Center will be built on a 100 acre site and will include 12 buildings utilizing 12½ acres. A total of 280 persons are employed by the Research Department, with a payroll of $2,000,000.00 annually, company spokesmen said. At the age of sixteen years John D. Rockefeller became a clerk in a mercantile establishment. Flynn Will Head MIT Committee Bernard F. Flynn, 9891 South Los Angeles street, Anaheim, this week was named captain of a Southern California Massachusetts Institute of Technology committee to work with local alumni who will participate in the Institute's new development and expansion program. Flynn, a graduate of MIT, class of 1923, is president of the Pacific Soap Company. The MIT expansion program will be launched formally tonight (Thursday) with an alumni banquet at which time MIT's president, Dr. James R. Killiam, Jr., will address the group in the ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel, Los Angeles. MIT, one of the nation's foremost schools of science and engineering, was a notable contributor to the technological development that made possible the United States victory in World War II. The Institute's new program is designed to expand and improve these war-tested facilities. Mrs. Vida Hooper Taken By Death Mrs. Vida Hooper, 70, a native of Kentucky, died early yesterday (Wednesday) morning at 13211 South West street, Garden Grove, after an extended illness. She had lived in southern California for the past 20 years, and until recently, made her home with her daughter, Mrs. E. Railsback at 729 North Street. In addition to her daughter leaves two sisters, Mrs. Simmons of Kentucky and Edward Fortson of Illinois; brother, John Morton of Tampa and two grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted this afternoon (Thursday) o'clock in the Hilgenfeld cemetery with the Rev. W. W. Denton, tor of the Church of God, Co-officiating. Interment was in Anaheim cemetery. 356,778 Visit Boulder Dam Boulder City, Nevada—Record breaking blizzards January and February which analyzed all forms of travel through western United States, a total of 356,778 persons visited Boulder Dam during the past year. Christensen, director of paving Boulder Canyon project, revealed today. The statement disclosed only the abnormal travel year 1947 and '48 and the peak pre-year of 1941 surpassed the total. The 1949 daily average 977 was just a bit above the time average of 968. Funeral arrangements have been completed and will be announced later by Hilgenfeld University, this city.
