Locals Out to Dump Downey
In Cage Tilt Here Friday
Keith’s Kolonist Kagers take on an up and coming Downey quintet on the local court Friday night.
While the Colonists were dropping a heart-breaker to Santa Ana Tuesday, the Downey boys were sharpening their shots by swamping a highly regarded Rosemead team.
The local team had Santa Ana with seconds to go when Lady Jinx made her appearance.
Hopkins, who was hotter than an atomic explosion, got his mits on the ball with seconds remaining and let go—and that was the ball game.
Dub Helsing was fouled and after a hectic fifteen minutes which marked with hilarity, riot, indecision and just plain bedlam, the officials reversed a previous stand and ruled he was fouled after the horn had blown.
Coach Sammy Keith protested the ruling, pointing out the rule which provides that if the timers disagree the basket shall count and the foul shot shall be granted.
But the books have the Saints the victors which should give Anaheim’s cage mentor memory of three other championship-caliber teams which were victims of whatever word may be deemed appropriate.

A graduate of University of Southern California, Oliver started his academic work and college athletic career at West Point. He has also studied at San Diego State, Stanford University, University of Arizona, University of Oregon and the United States Naval Academy. He is one of the few nationally known coaches entitled to wear a Phi Beta Kappa key.
Former Sailor Coach
"Tex" started his coaching at San Diego High school in 1922, moving to Santa Ana where he headed the city physical education program for 1926 to 1933. At Santa Ana he coached football and track in the high school. He then went to Tucson where from 1933 to 1938 he was varsity coach of football and track for the University of Arizona. His outstanding success here merited a bid from the University of Oregon where he was head football coach except for the war years from 1938 to 1947.
He served at Lt. Commander in the United States Navy during World War II, including a tour of duty as head coach of the St. Mary's Pre-Flight team that included Frankie Albert, Hal Grayson, Ray George, Howard Lusk and other All-Americans. While here, he was a senior contributor to the Navy book on Football.
Instruct Coaching
Warburton indicated that addition of Oliver to the college faculty will strengthen still further the men's physical education department and enable young men looking forward to a career in coaching to secure outstanding lower division instruction at Fullerton.
Mr. Oliver is married to a Stanford graduate and has one daughter aged eleven.

In SCIC Race
Needing a win to stay in the Southern California Intercollegiate Conference basketball race, the defending champion Whittier College cagers hope to improve their loop standing at the expense of the Caltech Beavers Saturday night, January 14, in the Pasadena City College Gym.
After losing their opener to the Pomona Sagehens, 44-41, Saturday night, the Quakers would be virtually knocked out of the title chase by a Caltech victory. Saturday night's defeat at the hands of the Sagehens was the third SCIC loss suffered by Coach Aubrey Bonham's Poet casabamen since the 1945-46 season. Bonham-coached quintets piled up 22 wins in 24 contests to win three consecutive crowns from 1946-49.
Lacking an individual high-scoring performer, the Quakers will try to make it hot for the Engineers with all hands firing. Carrying the bulk of the offensive load from his guard position will probably be Captain Gordon Pedersen, top Poet scorer, who is capable of hitting from any place on the floor. Pedersen has a nine game average of 9.11 points.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. and will precede a tile between Occidental and Redlands in a double bill.
