SPORTS Colonists Open Cage Circuit Here Friday Unveiling of the Colonist basketball squads to Sunset League competition will take place on the local court Friday evening when Coach Sammy Keith and crew entertain the invading Newport Harbor quintets. Tabbed as one of the strong contenders for honors in what figures to be a wide-open race, the Colonist varsity will hit the boards with a team averaging over the six-foot mark. In twelve pre-season tilts, the Keith men have eked out ten wins over such high powered outfits as Santa Barbara and Jordon of Long Beach. The two losses were in the Huntington Beach tourney at the hands of Tustin and Garden Grove. The least said about the strategy employed in these games the better. Center St., Anaheim Ph. 2206 Poets Open With Pomona Starting the new year off with their Southern California Intercollegiate Conference crown, the Whittier College basketteers open their 1949-50 conference race against the Pomona College Sagehens Saturday night, January 7, in Wardman gym. Champions of the S.C.I.C. for the past three seasons, the Poets will know more about their chances for a fourth title in a row after Saturday night's encounter. Hen Coach Tom Bell lost one of the biggest scoring threats in the conference by the graduation of Locke Olson, but has come up with Carl Wittenberg, 6'5" sophomore from Beverly Hills, who needs only experience to become a dangerous scoring punch. Playing along side of Wittenberg to help him over the rough spots are veterans Pete Welsh and Bill Hamman at forwards, and Bob Essig and Willie Cooper at guards. In conference competition the Sagehens have a .500 mark. They lost their opener with the University of Redlands Bulldogs, 61-52, and topped the Occidental Tigers, 60-49. The Poets and Sagehens only common opponent, Los Angeles State, edged Pomona 48-45, while dropping a 46-40 tilt to the Quakers. In pre-conference play the Poets have two wins and six losses to their credit, being able to beat only Los Angeles State and San Francisco State. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub.
