SANTA ANA Anaheim Gazette, Thursday, January 5, 1950 Pigmy Cattle To Be Shown Anaheim American Legion Post No. 172 brings to Anaheim the pigmy cattle shown above which are to be exhibited on Thursday, January 5th, in front of the Anaheim Theatre from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Lois Holter, sister of Gene Holter, who owns the cattle, shows how they fit in the back of an ordinary car. Commander Dr. Paul Arnold says the midget cattle are one-fifth the size of ordinary cattle and that the exhibit is free, but donations will be accepted. The size is such that they are able to walk under an ordinary kitchen table. School Board to Ask Variance Special meeting of the Board of Trustees of Anaheim school district was held Wednesday, which time the board authorized the superintendent of schools to make application for variance for the construction of the Thomas Jefferson School at 504 East South street. This was in conformity with a letter received from E. P. Hapgood secretary of the Planning Commission, on June 22, 1948,—"the Commission approves this proposed location, but wishes to inform you that under our present zoning ordinance, it may be necessary for you to file an application for a variance in the zoning restrictions before starting construction on the structure." At the meeting the board also passed a resolution accepting the deed, and authorizing the payment for the addition to the Horad Mann school site, and authorizing advertisement for an additional bus. The next regular meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held January 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the of Anaheim American Legion Post No. Also to be shown are Peruvian bears with claws like a bird, hair like a sheep dog, ears like a monkey and teeth like a rabbit. The tiny bears coo like a dove and whistle like a bird. Salvation Army Makes New Year Appeal Here A New Year appeal for cast-off materials is being made today by Brigadier Fred Ohrn, manager of the Salvation Army social service center serving this area. Need for articles with which to replenish stocks depleted by large scale Christmas aid activities was stressed. "Calls for assistance to the needy were the heaviest in local history," Brig. Ohrn said, "and were far above our anticipation. As a result we must have additional items which are no longer useful to present owners. These will be refinished and repaired in the social service center's workshops and placed in Salvation Army stores for redistribution." Donations of throwaway materials will be picked up by Red Shield trucks by telephoning Anaheim 4631, the center manager said. Clothing, shoes, furniture, stoves, refrigerators, appliances, and miscellaneous items are being sought. Hundreds of families awoke to a merrier Christmas this year and gave thanks for the helping hand extended by the Salvation Army, Brig. Ohrn revealed today. Three motherless children and their father, a veteran of World War I who is sick and unable to work, were among these. The children were given new shoes and boxes of Christmas foodstuffs were presented them. The plight of Mrs. C... recently widowed, and her two-year-old child was discovered by the Salvation Army and they were given aid. The little family resides in a tiny trailer, and was in dire need of food. Current high unemployment rates were reflected in the case of a father and his five children. He had been unable to secure employment and Christmas looked as though it would be "just another day." Thanks to the Salvation Army social service center, the children, who ranged from three to ten years of age, were outfitted with shoes and clothing. On Christmas Day, a worker from the local center took toys and baskets of food to the grateful family. Benjamin Franklin was the 15th child in a family of 17 children. The entire nation commemorates his birth date, January 17, 1706, during International Printing Week, January 15th-21st.
