SOCIETY and CLUB ACTIVITIES (Continued from Page 4) Need Soap for Sparkling Yule A "Clean Christmas" for at least 25,000 needy European children will be a sparkling reality if southern California reaches its goal in the "Soap for Kiddies Overseas" drive being sponsored jointly with CARE, nationally known relief organization, and Lever Brothers Company, according to Edward J. Flynn, western CARE director. The campaign was to have closed prior to this time, but met with such enthusiastic response from the children of Europe that it has been extended through December 31, he said. CARE guarantees delivery of a bar of Lever Brothers' Swan soap to needy children overseas for every two Swan soap wrappers sent to CARE, Boston 1, Mass. With 50,000 soap wrappers set as the closing weeks' objective for southern California, churches, boys and girls organizations, civic groups, schools, women's clubs and others have agreed to get behind the drive. Many are staging special collection days when members will canvass their neighborhoods for the soap wrappers which will then be brought to a central headquarters to be forwarded to CARE. CENTER ANAHEIM 2068 Slate Padua Hills Yule Production "Las Posadas," famous annual Yuletide presentation of the Mexican Players will be staged at Padua Hills Theatre near Claremont November 30 through January 7, Wednesday through Saturday evenings, and Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. Heralding the 1949 holiday season these footlight productions will reproduce the Christmas customs of Old Mexico and Spanish California. A record attendance is expected at the gala opening November 30. Visitors from all parts of the globe have been attracted to the traditional drama at Padua Hills. "Las Posadas" plays to capacity audiences for most performances. The colorful pageant was written by Agnes Emillie Peterson, well-known Los Angeles educator, and with additions and elaborations by the Padua staff, is presented in the English language. The drama tells the story of how the simple faith of a child created a seeming miracle that turned a tragic Christmas Eve in a humble Mexican home into a doubly joyous occasion for a janitor's little family. Introduced are such quaint Mexican Yuletide customs as construction of the nacimiento, or family shrine; breaking the pinata, substitute for the Christmas tree; singing the famed Christmas litany, and a glamorous holiday fiesta. A merienda, or after-theatre party in the Mexican manner will be staged with each performance of "Las Posadas." Shower Honors Shirley Brant A personal and canned food shower was given in honor of Miss Shirley Louise Brant, 9862 Brookhurst road, last week by Miss Jerry Gibson of 10042 East Ball road. Twenty-four persons were present including the honoree and her hostess. After bridal and sweet-heart games were enjoyed Miss Brant opened her many lovely gifts. The presents were arranged in a large white basket. Pink and white streamers, attached to the four corners of the ceiling ran down to the basket which was accented with a huge pink bow. Query Need Of Veterans Service Center vath and Jack Sargent were members of Smith's committee. Another grand jury committee, headed by Sargent, reported urgent need of action to correct housing and space shortage at the juvenile home in Santa Ana, where cramped quarters force the mingling of younger and older boys, "first offenders and repeaters." To supply the double function of providing a home-like place for juveniles awaiting court hearings, and a correctional unit for juveniles under commitment by the courts, would require a separate correctional building, to qualify for state financial aid, it was point- ed out. The juror's recommended indefinite postponement of the correctional unit and construction of a new juvenile home to meet needs of the next 20 years. The present juvenile home would be suitable as new quarters for the county road department, which needs more space than is available in its present courthouse annex location, the grand jurors recommended. The juvenile home is understaffed, the grand jurors said, after comparing it with those of other counties. GIVE URGENT CALL FOR SEAMSTRESSES Anaheim seamstresses to complete bed jackets for veterans and servicemen's hospitals are urgently needed, it was announced by Mrs. Leo J. Friis, chapter chairman of the local Red Cross. Ready-cut garments may be sewn at the chapter office, second floor of the city hall building on East Center street, or completed in private homes.
