Springfield Enters Float In Rose Parade The City of Springfield, Illinois, home of Abraham Lincoln, will enter a floral float depicting Lincoln and his ideals, as our greatest American Heritage, in the 1950 Tournament of Roses, January 2, Parade Chairman John H. Biggar announced today. Springfield’s Mayor, Harry A. Eielson, will journey to Pasadena, arriving here December 27. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Eielson, their son and daughter, and will be distinguished guests of the Tournament while visiting Pasadena. Miss Dorothy Martin, 92 East Orange Grove avenue, Pasadena, acted as one of the Tournament’s “ambassadors” while visiting Springfield last summer. Miss Martin presented a brochure to Mayor Eielson at that time inviting his city to participate in the 1950 Tournament under the theme, “Our American Heritage.” Mayor Eielson had a special interest in Pasadena’s famed floral pageant as he participated in the 1919 World War I Rose Bowl game when the U. S. Naval Training Station team played the U. S. Marine Barracks team, and is well acquainted with our festival here. Parade committeeman Virgil White visited Springfield last week and final plans for the eastern entry were completed at that time. The float will show in flowers the Lincoln Memorial in Springfield, his home there, and the famous log-splitting episode. Sixty-five entries have been received so far for the 1950 event. Entries have been closed for several weeks, but the Tournament Parade committee is still expecting to hear favorably from entries that were invited prior to the closing date. Mr. Biggar announced that approximately seventy floats will participate in the 61st annual parade in addition to the many fine marching bands and equestrians. Repurchase of GI Leave to Complete Term Any veterans who are close to the exhaustion of their entitlement to Federal educational help under the GI Bill of Rights are advised by Ben Lieberman, Orange County Service Officer, to look into the matter of repurchasing some of the leave time charged against them. They may find, he said, that it is possible to extend the period of their right to GI Bill subsistence and tuition payments. Unless a veteran-student specifically requests otherwise, he is placed on for 15 days at the end of enrollment period. He is paid assistance allowance for this time, but it is charged his total entitlement. If a veteran now finds has only enough GI Bill ment to carry him, for ex- to a date 12 days before the point of a college term, he have to complete the term own expense. But if he titlement enough to carry past that mid-term date, complete the term at gov’t expense.
