CALIFORNIA Last Week
(Western News Service)
The Governor lampooned the A. I. Former Anaheim Man Heads CROP In Orange County
William Thomas, formerly of Anaheim and now a resident of Los Angeles, has accepted the chairmanship of the Christian Rural Overseas Program (CROP) in Orange county, according to Frank Hobart Nelson, southern area director for the nation-wide relief movement in California.
Mr. Thomas comes to this movement with a wide background in the fields of public relations and advertising and as an instructor in Oregon high schools.
Calendar Art Causes First-Class Mystery
When Hernando G. Villa (1022 E. Olympic Blvd.), pioneer Los Angeles artist and authority on Indian lore, created his painting "The Chiefs" for Santa Fe Railway's 1950 calendar neither he nor the railroad dreamed it would result in a first class mystery.
But it did.
Shortly after the railroad began distributing the calendar, which shows an Indian chief riding a white horse and waving to a passing streamliner, the company's offices were deluged with calls from the public asking for an explanation of two red hand prints on the horse's chest.
Nobody on the railroad knew the answer to the "mystery of the red hands," and as the calls continued to increase, the company appealed to Villa for assistance.
His explanation: The Arapahoe Indian warrior dips his hand into a special dye and puts a hand print on his horse to indicate the horse is a veteran of battle.
You might call it the Indian version of the "service stripe."
Tapia Services Held Tuesday
Funeral services for Primo Tapia, 65, who was found dead at his home, 10782 Oak street, Stanton, last Friday afternoon, were held in the Catholic church at Compton, Tuesday.

The Governor lampooned the A.I. Stewart assembly interim committee on governmental efficiency for dropping its investigation of lobbying in the lap of Sacramento district attorney O'Shea; said a thorough inventory would be made of the department of social welfare before any special session is considered to assist counties financially in paying old age pensions; said that former director Charles Wollenberg would not return to his post as chief of the department and that as yet, he has no candidate for the job in mind; attended a western governors' conference in Salt Lake City; made it clear that his daughter Virginia, reported to be in New York to go on the stage, "isn't in New York, doesn't intend to be there, and is attending the University of California."
The Departments: Fish and game prepared for the opening of phasant season November 18 with predictions that this would be one of the best seasons ever experienced; California highway patrol Chief Peterson alerted all captains and traffic officers throughout the state for the forthcoming holiday season, stating the full strength of the patrol will be on duty during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays; motor vehicles plans to give motorists the best service they ever have received during the forthcoming season for license renewal; state athletic commission plans to hold examinations for athletic inspectors to fill intermittent positions in several cities.
Legal Opinions: The attorney general's office held that assessments of 25 cents per ton on prunes must be paid on surplus as well as tonnage put in the market; unemployment insurance appeals board denied benefits to a bed-ridden claimant because his wife neglected to file papers.
REMOVED FROM HOSPITAL TO LOCAL REST HOME
Mrs. Ottillie Stechert Spykerman of 301 North Emily street, who has been confined to Anaheim Community hospital, was removed to Mrs. Cherry's Rest Home at 122 South Olive street, this city, last Friday. She will be happy to see her friends at the rest home. Mrs. Spykerman is well known in this city, having been a florist for the past number of years and in the earlier days was a teacher in the Anaheim schools. Her friends are hoping for an early recovery.
The annual CROP Week observance will be held in Orange county this week, November 14 to 20, heading the activities will be some of the leading agricultural minds of the county.
Within the ensuing week, Mr. Thomas will make further announcements as to methods of making contributions to this program, names of general CROP committee, county goal, etc.
The work of CROP in alleviating starvation overseas has received the highest praise from such national leaders as Charles Brannan, secretary of agriculture who states that "American agriculture will need to continue to assist in feeding the people of the world for some years to come ... There is a distinct value in voluntary relief programs, such as CROP. Their good-will building value is high in proportion to the cash value of commodities sent."
CROP is sponsored nationally by Church World Service (22 Protestant denominations), Catholic Rural Life and Lutheran World Relief.
Parliamentary Scripts Studied
Three scripts dealing with parliamentary procedure were featured on Monday night's dinner program of the Anaheim Toastmasters club. Vice-president Marion Pickel, presided over the business session at Mother's Kitchen.
After Pickel opened the meeting and John Knutzen gave the invocation, the scripts were handled by Toastmaster chairmen including Ken Heuler, Fred Rusch and W. E. Dixon. Robert H. Allen acted as general evaluator for the constructive program.
John Knutzen, deputy governor, and Louis Taylor, educational chairman, attended the district council meeting held last night (Wednesday) in Corona.
Next week's program assignments will be mailed out, secretary Ed Wright announced.
