Farm Bureau Membership Totals 3150 Officials of the Orange County Farm Bureau are jubilant today over the completion of another fiscal year in their local history which dates back to the formation of the Bureau in the last months of 1917. The chief cause for joy is maintenance of a membership of 3150 memberships despite the general increase in dues and despite a declining price return for agricultural products. Earl Laux, chairman of membership, feels that this is the first time in the history of the state Farm Bureau that such membership feat has been accomplished in the face of increased dues. Nine farm bureau centers are included in the membership and final figures of the year resulted in the following: Anaheim, 415; Cypress-Magnolia, 230; Foothill, 410; Garden Grove, 655; La Habra, 138; Placentia, 183; Tustin, 624; West Orange, 325; and Yorba Linda, 171. The statewide membership of farm bureau approaches 60,000 farm families, while the national membership is approximately 1,-300,000. About one-tenth of the whole human family indulge in chewing betel nut. Laraway Rites This Saturday Funeral services for Louisa I. Laraway, 80, who died Tuesday afternoon at 324 West Wilshire avenue, Fullerton, after a prolonged illness, will be conducted in the First Lutheran church, 240 East Wilshire avenue, Fullerton, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. George H. Muedeking, pastor of the church of which the deceased woman was a charter member, will officiate for the rites. A native of Wisconsin, Mrs. Laraway had been a resident of California for 27 years, the past 17 of which she had spent in Fullerton. For the past seven years she had made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Oscar A. Leland of the West Wilshire avenue address. Surviving are one son, Guybery Laraway of Huntington Park; three sisters, Mrs. Carrie B. Ruess, Tacoma, Washington, Mrs. Etta Bramwell, Zattek, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Estella E. St. Hill of Manhattan Beach, and two grandsons in Huntington Park. Interment will be in Loma Vista Memorial Park, Hilgenfeld mortuary, Anaheim, is in charge of arrangements. Smoyer, Los Angeles county farm advisor recently. Young trees are extremely susceptible to frost injury but a little extra care will prevent them from being killed. The best method of prevention is to mound dirt around the base of the tree. The pile should be high enough to protect the bottom buds on the trunk. This will, of course, only protect that portion of the trunk that is covered. In case of severe frost all parts above the protected portion will be killed but the buds protected under the dirt layer will grow rapidly the following spring and will usually produce a good-sized tree by the end of the growing season. There is relatively no danger from diseases attacking the trunk of the tree by mounding one earth around the trunk. However, this method cannot be used to protect citrus trees because brown rot gummosis will attack citrus bark when soil is piled up around the trunk of the tree. Avocado trees are not affected in this manner. Another excellent method of frost protection is to wrap the trunk of the tree with several thicknesses of newspaper and tie the paper securely.
