GIRL SCOUT NEWS
Each week new troops of Girl Scouts and Brownies are reporting their activities.
Cypress Troop 21 has a new leader this year; Mrs. H. L. Torrence, who is being assisted by Mrs. Charles Daniel and Mrs. I. R. Mahaffey.
These fourth grade Brownies recently paid a visit to the Cypress Fire House where Fire Chief Pat Arnold and Captain W J. McCoid explained the workings of the fire apparatus and the radio and bell systems. Each girl had a chance to squirt water with the fire hose, and then Chief Arnold stood treat for ice cream.
Members of this troop this year include Mary Lee Allen, Betty Ann Biggs, Shirley Jean Cram, Claudia Kay Daniel, Zedith Ellen Hathcock, Ellen Head, Betty Janet Kemp, Edythe Lindley, Emma Rodriquez, Clydene Steelman, Dorene Torrence, Elvera Vegina, Gay Wlaschia, Mary Mello, Patsy Hart, Nancy Sewell, Jerry Wheat, Barbara Mahaffey and Pamela Thorsen.
Mark Birthdays
Darlene Furr, scribe for Horace Mann Troop 33, reports that birthdays of Darlene McLaughlin and Sally Bengochea were celebrated with the serving of two birthday cakes and punch.
Troop members reviewed their hostess badge—how to set a table, place silver and dishes properly, duties of a good hostess, and how to go about making friends.

George Washington
Greatest activity of all Scouting groups is being evidenced by Brownie fly-ups, now new fifth grade Girl Scouts, in all schools of the city.

Shirley Burgess and Harriet Ewing were unable to attend.
Horace Mann
Horace Mann Troop 33 has completed organization and has named Judy Winfrey, president, and Jean Foster, scribe. Leaders for these sixth graders are Mrs. A. D. Robinson and Mrs. E. R. Furr.
Food conditions generally are much better than the do-gooders would have us believe. There is an abundance of simple foods; especially in France and Italy, and even in England the problems are variety in diet, and the severe rationing. I have among my notes the food, soap, and other allowances, and you will see what an austerity program" means to a people. It can become very tiresome. We have never expired anything like it.

WASHINGTON AS SEEN
By Congressman JOHN PHILLIPS
These should be considered "first impressions," and yet, to be that properly, they should have been written before. Suppose we call them half-way impressions, somewhere between the first impressions and the more careful analysis which follows eventually with any investigator or traveler. They are impressions of Europe in 1949, and some comments on the American influences there.
The people in the various nations are not the same in their thinking, their likes and dislikes, nor their racial, religious, economic backgrounds. It has always been curious to observe how the characteristics change, when one crosses a border. Even the architecture seems to change, and yet the distances are less than between states here, sometimes between counties.
There are 12,107 square miles in the 22nd District, and the present population is reported to be 367,740. There are 11,775 square miles in Belgium, with a population over 8 millions, and there are 15,764 square miles in the Netherlands, with a population of 9½ millions. Little Luxembourg has 999 square miles and a population of 289,000, smaller than this district. The British Isles have an area of only 94,000 square miles but a population of 50 millions. These are factors to consider when we talk about unions, and future programs, or when, with the youthful enthusiasm of this nation, we try to make over the older nations in our own image. We send corn to the Italians who eat wheat, and wheat to the Italians who eat corn. We send tractors to people who want donkeys and mules and we propose farm plans, suitable in California, to people who still farm little tracts of land under a most intensive kind of cultivation.
The Italians have gone to work. The results are showing. The
