Poets Tackle Cal Aggies
Whittier—With a tie for the 1949 loop crown assured, the Whittier College Poets step out of the Southern California Intercollegiate Conference to take on the California Aggies in a grid tilt to be played on the Aggies field in Davis Friday night, November 11.
"Chief" Newman's Quakers gained a piece of the championship by downing the Pomona College Sagehens, 14-13, Saturday night.
The Poets are counting on the return of Quarterback Dick Tucker to lead them to their seventh victory in eight starts. Tucker is the leading ground gainer on the Quaker squad with 226 yards by rushing, and 301 through the air, making a total of 527 yards. The ace signal caller suffered a kidney bruise in the Cal Poly game and saw action only as a ball holder against the Sagehens.
The Poets and Aggies faced two common opponents this year. Whittier College beat Santa Barbara, 20-6, and the Occidental Tigers, 54-6, while the Aggies lost to the Gauchos 33-0, and was toped by the Bengals, 26-0.
SAYS FISH SCARCE AT LAKE MEAD
Bob Williams, sporting goods store owner, returned late last week after trying his piscatorial skill at Lake Mead. The lake area was not treated to fair southern California weather and the fish took to the quiet of deep water leaving Williams and his out-of-town angler friends without much of a catch.

Howard Fights Caldwell at Legion Ring
Nap Howard and Jay Caldwell, middleweights, collide in the top attraction at Hollywood Legion Stadium this evening, Thursday, November 10.
In deference to Armistice Day, which falls on Friday this year, the Legion is showing one day earlier than usual.
The contest between these two hard-fighting youngsters looms as a real thriller for action. Neither is a stranger to Hollywood fight fans. Both have won good bouts at the Legion in recent weeks.
Howard just stopped promising Joe Cardenas in 10 heats at the filmland club, while Caldwell's last Stadium appearance was a unanimous win over Bert Mendoza.
Both boys have been coming along nicely since entering the main eventers class. Howard, a likeable colored chap, has shown signs of real ability by remaining unbeaten in his last six bouts. He counts wins over Pedro Jiminez, Bert Mendoza and Vicente Villavicencio. He also drew with Junior Washington.
He holds a split duke over Jay, having taken a close bout from the good-looking Caldwell last March 22, at Phoenix, Arizona.
Tommy Yamaoka, Japanese bantam who is on the threshold of stellar billing, fights Russ McCarty in Thursday's six round semi-windup.
Four rounders are: Monte Clark vs. Dan Nardico, 175 pounds; Jimmy Lydon vs. Teto Garcia, 160 pounds; Bobby Harris vs. Al Williams, 160 pounds; and Sammy Figueroa vs. Jimmy Burhus, 137 pounds.
Roy Mabee, local angler, witnessed the taking of the longest Marlin swordfish, to date this season. He was with a party comprising Dr. Beggs of Long Beach and Charles Heltz of Grant's Pass, Oregon. Heltz nabbed the 735-pound fish in waters at La Paz, Mexico.
The New York Sun sold for the world-record price of $40,000 in 1837.

Fullerton JC Meets Mt. San Antonio Friday
Fullerton Junior College Hornet footballers will be the underdogs Friday when they meet the fast Mt. San Antonio team at the latter's home field. Mt. Sac gave pennant-bound Santa Ana Dons their scare of the season in a fiercely contested struggle this week.
Showing power in midfield but losing their drive in pay dirt, Fullerton’s Hornets have won one and lost four to date. Against the Weber (Ogden; Utah) Wildcats Saturday evening the Hornets lost 30-26 in a game studded with long broken-field runs and one-hand pass reception. This was the first defeat the Hornets have had from the Utah boys in the series of intersectional games.
Short passes were the downfall of the Hornets in their game with the Wildcats. The Utah boys made 24 passes during the game and although most were not completed those that clicked hurt the Hornets. Standout player in the game was Bob Ferguson, Fullerton freshman halfback who scored the Hornets’ 24 points and was good for blocking, passing and broken-field running. Hornets had the visitors in statistics and first downs, but the Weber “heads-up” playing made up for this by capitalizing on all breaks.
