SPORTS Poets Tackle Pomona in Homecoming Tilt Whittier—Coach Wallace "Chief" Newman's Whittier college gridders will try for their third Southern California Intercollegiate Conference victory when they meet the Pomona collage Sagehens in the 1949 Homecoming tilt, Saturday night, November 5, on Hadley Field. The Sagehens and Poets are tied for first in the S.C.I.C. with two wins each. Pomona's entry holds victories over Caltech, 32-12, and the University of Redlands Bulldogs, 27-14. Saturday night's win over Redlands was pulled out of the fire in the fourth quarter, with two touchdowns by the Sagehens backfield ace, John McColl. The Quakers conference record shows decisions over Caltech, 55-7, and the Occidental Tigers, 54-6. Outside the conference the Sagehens have defeated the San Diego Marines, 34-28; Santa Barbara College, 20-14; La Verne College, 40-33; and have lost to the San Diego State Aztecs, 33-13. Newman's Poets have downed the Santa Barbara Gauchos, 20-6, San Francisco State, 60-0, and Arizona State, 20-13. Saturday night the Quakers were knocked from the undefeated ranks by a hard fighting Cal Poly eleven, 19-0. '49 Deer Season Boxing Commission Orders Manual Flores to Rest Sacramento (WNS) — A two week suspension of Manuel Flores, amateur boxer of Anaheim, for rest, was announced today by the State Athletic Commission. Hornets Host Weber in Inter-state Tilt Fullerton Junior college footballers will meet their traditional out-of-state rivals, Weber college of Ogden, Utah, November 5, on the Hornet home field. Neither team has been in the win bracket this season but are evenly matched. Colorful half-time festivities are planned and the game promises tops in football entertainment. Fullerton shows distinct improvement despite their resounding 40-6 defeat at the hands of Chaffey college last Saturday. Their first half against the Ontarlans showed them dominating the field with an edge in first downs. The Hornets threatened to score four times; score was all tied up in the half-time with Chaffey appearing on the run. Bob Hoyos, dead-eye passer from Ontario, spearheaded a razze-dazzle pass attack in the second half that the Hornets could not fathom. Chaffey appeared to score at will, racking up five tallies and four conversions. Toward of No Return" in the Chamberlain Basin is excellent, according to E. O. Hutson and Dale Villott, both of this city. Accompanied by Hutson's two cousins from Payette, the local men left this city two weeks ago for Idaho, and returned here just in time for the Hallowe'en festivities. Using a 30-30 caliber rifle, Hutson nabbed his quota of deer the first day, as did the other hunters. The second day he permanently paralyzed a bull elk. Flores Fights Hernandez in Rematch Friday Baron Von Stumme has Anaheim's Sal Flores in a six-round rematch with Al Hernandez, Friday night at the Hollywood Legion Stadium. The local boy pounded out a win over the battling Hernandez in a thrilling fight a few weeks ago. Flores is getting a load of press notices, crediting him with putting on the kind of fight the gallery-roosters love to see. A decisive win over Hernandez should be all the popular Anaheim fighter needs to assure him of main-billing at the Hollywood fight emporium. Headlining the card is the prim donna of the southland first scene—Art Aragon who is currently resting comfortably on the ninth rung on the lightweight's world ladder. His victim for the Friday night meeting of knockout incorporate is Freddie Babe Herman who can't be disregarded what with 11 KO's in 23 bouts at fight time. Golden Boy Aragon has just about the same batting average except times at bout is just doubled. '49 Deer Season Best in History San Francisco—Whether you got your share or not, chalk up California's 1949 deer hunting season as the best in history, says the Division of Fish and Game. In a recent progress report on the number of validated deer tags turned in by successful hunters, the Bureau of Game Conservation reveals the all-time record set last year as already being shattered. During the last week of October, the San Francisco office received the season's 50,000th tag. Last season's record-breaker was a reported kill of 47,789 bucks. While final 1949 figures will not be announced until sometime in January, division biologists are willing to go out on a limb to predict the annual return to be more than 52,000 deer tags. The increase in returned tags means not only more hunters afield, the game managers say, but more deer. They hint at further management practices to prevent the state's deer herds from overeating their ranges and weakening future generations by starvation. It's Easy... Dick Glover takes his Colonist eleven to Huntington Beach for a Sunset league tilt with the Oilers who have yet to put a mark in the win column. By comparative scores, the locals should be favorites in their fourth league contest. Anaheim rolled over Downey two weeks ago while Downey bounced back and defeated the Oilers 19-6 last Friday. With the exception of Orlyn North, the Colonists will be at full strength for their journey to the land of the oil derricks. Dickenson and Meade came out of the Santa Barbara contest with bruised legs but are expected to be in shape to play. It'll be the game of the season for the Chet Shirk's Bees who put their undefeated record on the line for this game with the Oilers who have won two and tied one. The contest will be played on the high school athletic field today, Thursday, November 3, kick-off at 3 p.m. A baby son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Acton, 725 North Paulina street, Anaheim, October 25, at Fullerton General hospital.
