Friis to Speak On Gold Rush
California Gold Rush Days will be colorfully described by Leo J. Friis, well-known Anaheim attorney, tonight (Thursday), when he appears as guest speaker before members of the Optimist club at the regular dinner session at Mother’s Kitchen.
In his speech Friis will give a town-by-town description of the boom cities following the discovery of gold at Coloma near Placerville, California.
Warren L. Rogers of the Santa Ana YMCA board was last week’s guest speaker. He was mainly responsible for the plotting of the Pacific Crest Trail System which runs from Campo near the Mexican border to Bellingham in Washington near the Canadian border.
Significant in his description was the marvelous work which he accomplished directing and leading Boy Scouts along the route in four to ten day relays. Optimists congratulated him for his fine example of boys’ work.
Three Years Afoot
Rogers spent three years hiking across the great mountains before the trek ended. During this time countless boys were introduced to great scenic wonders and to camping and map plotting techniques. Using no pack animals, the parties traveled with back pack carrying their bed rolls and food.
The Santa Ana man was on top of all the peaks but that of Mount Ranier and told Optimists of many famous hunting and fishing spots.
Congress later appropriated enough funds to provide trail markers to indicate the cross-country route. Beginning at the Canadian border, this Pacific Crest Trail System work is being accomplished by the Department of Interior and National Park Forest Service.
Louis Larson, chairman of the Thursday evening, Nov. 5, at the Elks club at 7 p.m., the meeting to be a dinner program.

SCHWARM FAMILY STALKS PHEASANTS
Swarms of pheasants and the E. A. Schwarm family tangled at hunting grounds in the Mississippi valley near Springfield, Minnesota, with resulting accidents to the birds and victory for the sportsmen. Schwarm who recently returned here to resume management of the Modern Cabinet and Fixture company, left for Minnesota with his wife and son, Bob, from their Santa Ana residence, September 28. This trip to his home state is an annual event for "Red" Schwarm who reports that the corn there is wonderful and that conditions in general are good.
