SPORTS Fullerton J. C. Faces Chaffey Fullerton Junior College's Hornets, trying to forget last Friday's 12-0 upset by Orange Coast, will be all out to get back into the Eastern Conference's win column Saturday night when they hook up with the strong Chaffey Panthers on the Fullerton field. Fullerton-Chaffey clashes, which in the past few years could have served as plots for a Frank Merriwell novel, almost never go the way they are supposed to. Back in '46, when the Panthers were on the way to the Eastern Conference championship, the Hornets tied the Panthers 6-6 to knock them out of a Little Rose Bowl bid. Again in '47 the Hornets upset the dope when they spilled the Panthers 15-14 on a last-minute field goal. This was the year that Chaffey represented the west in the Little Rose Bowl, and their loss to Fullerton was the only dark spot on their otherwise unblemished record. Last year the situation was reversed. The Hornets, sporting an unbeaten record, were favored to take the Panthers into camp, but little Austin Snyder, Chaffey half-back, took a screen pass as the final gun sounded and raced his potentialities. Cardenas and Howard will box at 165 pounds. Baby Arizmendi's latest importation, Aurelio Ramirez, squares off with Mel Martinez in a welterweight four-rounder. Other bouts at four rounds: Mario Torres vs. Eddie Seale, 155 lbs., and Joe Dominguez vs. Gil Chavez, 142 lbs. Colonists Go North for Tilt With S.B. Dons Coach Dick Glover takes his stalwarts of the gridiron to the site of his high school days Friday. Don Christenson, 225 pound tackle for Cal Poly, will see lots of action this Saturday night when the San Luis Obispo college Mustangs invade Whittier college stadium. Christenson is a sophomore at Cal Poly. Poets Out to Lasso Mustangs Saturday Night Whittier,—Southern California's only unbeaten, untied college Last year the situation was reversed. The Hornets, sporting an unbeaten record, were favored to take the Panthers into camp, but little Austin Snyder, Chaffey halfback, took a screen pass as the final gun sounded and raced 80 yards for a touchdown to give Chaffey a 32-31 victory. In an effort to get even, Fullerton's Coach Ed Goddard will attempt to have his Hornets fired to the hilt for Saturday night's tilt. Goddard's chances of getting even seem remote, though, since several of his first stringers will see little action due to injuries received in the Orange Coast tussle. Co-captain and right halfback Bill Newton, quarterback Jack Ritter, and fulback Hugh Simpson will probably see no action against Chaffey. To fill these vacancies Goddard will start 135-pound Wayne Smith, a reserve halfback at Orange high last year, and third stringers Bill Withrow and Ed Heinrich at right half, quarterback, and fullback respectively. The Hornets' second string fullback, Herb Collier, is also out of Saturday night's contest. First stringers, left end Gene Coda, right tackle Frank Celizic, and left half Bob Ferguson may see only limited action due to injuries sustained against Orange Coast. In comparing the two teams' records, the game appears to be a toss-up. Both teams have two and three records. San Bernardino, their only common opponent, was beaten by Chaffey 33-19, and Fullerton 24-12. Probable starting line-up: Fullerton Position Chaffey Carpenter LE Compton Adams LT Hall Binder LG Dutton Stuard C Black Shook RG Perry Celizic RT Pruneri Drake RE Davis Withrow Q Lane Ferguson LH Hoyos Smith RH Sholes Heinrich F Osborne Colonists Go North for Tilt With S.B. Dons Coach Dick Glover takes his stalwarts of the gridiron to the site of his high school days Friday night when the Colonists meet the Santa Barbara Dons in a non-league tilt. The locals will be without the aid of stand-out Larry. Weaver who will view the proceeding from the confines of the bench. Anaheim's nomination for all-league back is sidelined with a bad knee. Out indefinitely is Orlyn North with a badly sprained ankle received in last week's contest with Downey. It is uncertain whether North will be back in action for next week's game with the Huntington Beach Oilers. Glover has indicated that he intends giving the Anaheim passing attack with Jerry Dickenson and Enoch Peterson tossing the pigskin in a heavy workout in an attempt to smooth the Colonist aerial attack. Friday night's game may be all the Anaheim crew needs to clean up their '49 slate with a trio of wins over the Oilers, Orange and favored Fullerton. Rule No Room For Australian Rabbits Here Sacramento, (WNS)—There is no room in California for Australian wild rabbits, the state has enough rabbits of its own. This was the statement of the state department of agriculture today when it announced that its quarantine service had intercepted a pair of Australian rabbits in possession of a seaman. The animals were prohibited entry as agricultural pests. Newport Beach Veterans' Day Expect Big Crowd The Armistice Day celebration on Nov. 11 in Newport Beach is expected to draw from seventy-five to 100 thousand visitors from all over Orange county. Special entertainment for the children is being included in the plans being made. Poets Out to Lasso Mustangs Saturday Night Whittier,—Southern California's only unbeaten, untied college football team, Coach Wallace "Chief" Newman's Whittier College Poets settles down this week to prepare for the invasion of the Cal Poly Mustangs. The Poets and Mustangs play Saturday night on Hadley Field. Winning their eighth straight contest since 1948 last Saturday night, the Quakers polished off the previously undefeated Occidental College Tigers, 54-6. The win was their fifth consecutive victory this season. The Quakers came out of the Oxy fracas in good shape and all will be able to play with the possible exception of Halfback Tony Sicilliano, who sprained his ankle in practice last week. Cal Poly brings a dangerous passing threat to Whittier in the Vernon Bebernes to Charles Webe combination. Pebernes, 200 pound fullback, was eighth among the nation's small college passers last year, and landed a berth on the Little All-Coast second team. His passing put the Mustangs second among U.S. small colleges in passing offense with a 178.3 game average. Weber, 210 pound end, was fifth in pass receiving in the nation in 1948. His 31 catches were good for 710 yards and eight touchdowns. The Occidental Tigers furnish the only basis for comparison between the two teams. The Tiger defeated the Mustangs, 20-7. Whittier's Poets are established as favorites. Report Largest Troy Reunion Response from University of Southern California alumni, representing classes from 1880 to 1942 indicate the largest Homecoming reunion event in Trojan history according to Arnold Eddy, executive director of the association. Meeting together on November 4 at the Los Angeles Biltmore hotel, grads will be grouped in sections. Beginning with the class of 1920, each third year class will host to the classes of the preceding Stumme Cards Two Main's At Hollywood Two 10 round main events fill the bill at Hollywood Legion Stadium Friday night. Matchmaker Baron Von Stumme has come up with a live-wire action bout as a final windup, pitting youthful Rudy Vasquez against the highly emotive Mexican from Monterrey, Lauro Salas. The two featherweights, ranked among the best on the Pacific coast will probably stage a slambang battle. On his greater experience Salas will get the nod as the favorite in Friday's clash. His great bouts with Harold Dade, Carlos Chavez and Manuel Ortis, each of whom he met two times, give him a decided edge over his strong and willing young opponent. Vasquez, off his sensational upset win over Jimmie Savala just two weeks ago, is given a good chance to upset the fiery Lauro. Voted the best prelim boy of the year for 1948, Rudy has come along in fine fashion as a main eventer. The other 10 will provide Joe Cardenas' boosters with an inkling of things to be expected from this hard-fighting youngster.
