Colonists Face Newport Harbor In Sunset Inaugural at La Palma
An injury riddled Colonist squad will meet a strong Newport Harbor eleven in the Sunset league opener at La Palma park Friday evening.
Eddie Liptrap, right guard and Jack Moynihan, right end are definitely out of the inaugural against a Tar team which has been tabbed as the team to beat in Sunset competition this year.
Liptrap pulled some ligaments in his right leg during the Bell Garden fray last Friday while teammate Jack Moynihan is out with a strep throat.
The Newport eleven, coached by Al Irwin has bowled over its two opponents in pre-season contests to date. They've swamped Santa Monica 54-0 and Torrance, 34-0, but despite these impressive wins Irwin insists his boys aren't that good.
Glover's men dropped their initial game to Garden Grove 13-6 and came back last week with a 20-13 win over Bell Gardens.
To add to Coach Glover's woes, Angel Mata who was to take over for Liptrap was declared inelegible. North will play right guard and Pugh will probably start at center.
Other league openers are: Fullerton at Huntington Beach and Santa Ana at Downey. Orange draws a bye.

BATTLE FOR STOCK CAR TITLE—Scenes like this will be duplicated at Del Mar Fair Grounds Race track Sunday afternoon, October 16th, when Bill White stages the 100-mile National Championship Stock Car race. Here are three of the late model stock cars in action.
Plan 100-Mile Stock Car Race At Del Mar
Has your auto “more stuff” than your neighbor’s?
You’ll get the answer along with a shock of blazing speed when promoter Bill White stages the 100-lap Stock Car National Championship at the Del Mar race track fairgrounds mile track Sunday afternoon, October 16th.
This will be the first time San Diego county auto race fans have had the chance to see one of America's favorite sports, that of stock car racing.
Every one of the cars in the 100-lap speed spectacle will be absolutely stock. They will be exactly the same in all respects as the cars you see in new car showrooms.
Gov. Proclaims Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 9-15
Sacramento, (WNS)—Governor Earl Warren has designated October 9 to 15 as Fire Prevention Week in California.
The proclamation synchronized observance of the week in this state with National Fire Prevention Week.
“The fire hazard in California’s forests and grazing lands has been the most critical since 1945,” the proclamation said, “and will increase in severity until the advent of fall rains. Fires in these areas, which in nearly all cases could be prevented, constitute an economic calamity in the loss of priceless natural resources, the curtailment of badly needed wa

In order to make certain that all cars in the race are strictly stock, officials will impound all cars for twenty-four hours after the race. Mechanical experts will check every motor to see that nothing has been "souped-up."
Flores Fights Semi-Final At Hollywood Ring
Sal Flores, Anaheim middle-weight, is featured in the semi-windup at Hollywood Legion stadium this Friday night. He'll battle with Al Hernandez.
The local fighter is regarded as a stand-out prospect in southland boxing circles. This will be his third semi-windup fight at the filmland arena.
In the main event Jay Caldwell and Bert Mendoza renew their fistic rivalry in the 10-rounder, headlining the evening's card.
This will be the third meeting in the ring for these battlers who fought the fight-of-the-night at the Williams-Bolanos title tilt in a stirring contest which ended in a draw.
Mendoza holds a slight edge in the series to date with a knockout scored in Caldwell's own backyard at South Gate arena.
Deer Hunters Doing Okay
Sacramento, (WNS) — California hunters are having a more successful season this year than last, according to the latest tally of returned tags.
Hunters have returned to the state division of fish and game 30,859 tags to date this year. At the same date last year the number of returned tags indicated a kill of 27,529 bucks.
Orange county hunters have you know, recruiting isn't what it used to be. Things have really changed for those of us who wear the blue and white arm bands of Army and Air Force Recruiting.
About nine out of every ten men who drop into the office still ask me how much per head I get tell them absolutely nothing, they never look quite convinced. Back in England in the early 19th century all the recruit had to do was drink a "glass to the King" and accept a guinea coin. From then he was signed up. It didn't matter how the recruit was tricked into taking the drink, or the coin, and most recruiting took place in the local pubs.
Before the war, the greatest attraction of the service seemed to be three square meals a day. For young men who wanted to travel and see the world, recruiting promises were limited only by what the sergeant thought the recruit would believe. I've wondered just what the recruiter did if one of his burly enlistees came back at the end of a hitch to inform the sergeant what was what! That's a problem I wouldn't want to face!
Today recruiting is done by the book, and there's no room for vague promises by the recruiting sergeant. I, for one, don't want any of the men I enlist to come back and say I sold them a wrong "bill of goods." So far, I haven't. When I offer you a chance at a career, or a special program, there'll be no slip-ups. It'll say so right in the book.
Right now for instance, men with no previous service can enlist for the field artillery, the armored cavalry, the engineers, the infantry, or the coast artillery.
You have to be 17 to 35, to qualify, and you must be physically fit and mentally alert. After you pass the Army entrance, exams you'll be sent to basic training.
Then, you'll be assigned to the outfit you've picked. There won't be any slip-ups, either. If you pick the armored cavalry, for instance, you'll go to the armored cavalry.
Right now we're interested in seeing that a man gets what he wants out of the service, and no more of the pre-war promises with nothing to back them up.
You know, this office of mine at the City Hall in Fullerton is kept open for you, and if you want to know anything about the Army, drop in. I'll be glad to talk over Army prospects with you any time. Bring in your wife or...

Orange county hunters have turned in tags on 104 deer this year. The preceding season* the score was 52 returned tags.
Division officials said the number of returned tags does not indicate the full total of animals slain because a recent survey conducted by the opinion research center, University of Denver, proves only 52 percent of deer actually killed are reported by tags.
The report covers hunting activities during the split season in both northern and southern areas of the state.
Of all counties in the state conditions seemed to be best in Mendocino where 2,077 kills were reported.
Hall Wins Golf Final

In other handicap flight finals Fred Wener defeated Jim Lindley for the second flight crown; Lester Carden edged Bob Huelskamp for the third flight cup; Henry Scholl

Federalists Plan '49 Convention
The United World Federalists of Southern California will hold their 1949 convention in Santa Barbara October 8 at the Mar Monte Hotel, according to an announcement made today by Bert Owen, Los Angeles business man and chairman of the executive council of the southern division of UWF.
The main address of the day will come at 8:30 p.m. when Stanley Weigel, San Francisco attorney and chairman of the northern division of UWF will address the convention.
Mr. Weigel was a line officer in the Navy, is a member of the law firm of Landels and Weigel and the author of a book entitled "The Fair Trade Acts." He served on the committee to prepare the draft of the resolution passed by the California and other state legislatures asking Congress for a constitutional amendment "to expedite and insure the participation of the United States in a World Federal Government."
Also on the program will be a report by Robert A. Keyworth, radio newscaster in Tucson, Ariz., and executive director of United World Federalists in that city. He will tell the Santa Monica Assembly about the annual convention of the world movement for World Federal Government he attended early last month in Stockholm, Sweden.
Representatives from 30 United World Federalists chapters in southern California communities will meet in Santa Barbara. Part of the discussion will center around ways and means to get world government as soon as possible which members believe has become increasingly urgent with the announcement that Russia has the atom bomb and that some way other than war must be found to settle international differences.
