Over 600,000 Greek Children Divided By U.N. Children’s Fund
By DEMETRIUS IATRIDIS
(EDITOR'S NOTE: Demetrius Iatridis, who wrote the following article, was formerly liaison officer between the Greek Government and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Mission in Greece. His article is based on a typical case—of a helpless orphan girl who could not go on living without UNICEF—with which he became acquainted in the course of his work. Mr. Iatridis is now sturying social welfare procedures in the United States.
Elepheria, a pretty dark-haired girl of 12 years, used to live in Kryovrissi, a tiny village located in an isolated valley surrounded with chestnut trees, near the Greek-Albanian border. She had a simple, peaceful life, wandering all day in the hills after her father's flock of sheep and the big, black dog who lived after them.
Each evening, as the sun went down behind the high mountains near Gramos, Elepheria would usually lead the flock of sheep to the village, where she met her parents and her older brothers who had been at work in the fields. At that time in 1946, the men and women of the village were working hard to rebuild the ruins left behind by the German occupation.
At fighting was again to hit at Elepheria's village, for it caught in the civil strife. In 1946, the village was razed when the smoke cleared away from the razed village, the bodies of Elepheria's father and mother found.
Few months later, welfare workers found Elepheria herself in hospital of a neighboring town. Left leg had been seriously injured, but with proper assistance she would perhaps be able walk again. However, the doc were concerned with an even more serious problem.
Since her admittance to the hostel, Elepheria had not uttered a single word, nor had she smiled. Keyes, vacant and expressionless.
Upon arriving in Greece, it is turned over to the Agricultural Bank of Greece which acts on behalf of the Ministry of Supply as an agent. Then, in accordance with a plan of operations prepared by the Greek Government and the UNICEF Mission, the Agricultural Bank allocates the supplies to the Ministry of Welfare for the feeding of the pre-school age children and pregnant mothers, and to the Ministry of Education for the feeding of school age children. These two Ministries prepare the detailed plans of distribution of the cargo. After this plan is discussed with the UNICEF Mission, it is dispatched to the Agricultural Bank of Greece whose responsibility then is to ship the supplies to the various towns. They are then delivered to the local representatives of the Ministry of Welfare and the Ministry of Education. In addition, 360,000 children are reached through feeding programs in the schools.

Since that day, Elepheria and the 40 children in the orphanage have received daily milk and other food items from UNICEF. They are not the only ones: some 640,000 children receive a daily supplementary meal from UNICEF which has been operating in Greece, in cooperation with the Greek Government, since December 1947.
From UNICEF, Elepheria receives a daily food supplement, she uses blankets and sheets made from UNICEF wool and cotton, she takes UNICEF cod-liver oil; she will be wearing shoes made from UNICEF leather. To Elepheria, as to hundreds of other children, the word UNICEF has become a symbol of hope and salvation. Greek mothers are continually expressing, through the UNICEF representatives, their deep gratitude to the United Nations for what has been done, is being done, and will be done for their children. By August 1949, more than $4,000,000 worth of supplies had been sent to Greece by UNICEF and an additional $2,-600,000 is on the way.
The food that Elepheria receives comes to her from many lands, purchased with many currencies.
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
"The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit." This declaration from the Proverbs will be the Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Unreality" in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston.
In his sermon on the Mount as related by Matthew, Jesus instructed his followers: "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: . . . And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? . . . Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. . . When Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes."
Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:" "Christian Science rises above the evidence of the corporal senses; but if you have not risen above sin yourself, do not congratulate yourself upon your blindness to evil or upon the good so soon..."
