Appropriate Funds for State Highway 171
Sacramento (WNS)—The State Highway Commission announced it has appropriated $25,000 to provide funds for improving state 171, between Artesia street and the Santa Fe underpass in Buena Park.
The existing roadway is 84 feet wide, with the central portion of 40 feet paved, and the remainder unimproved.
The commission said that during the summer, the shoulders become dusty, and during the winter, muddy. Local residents have asked improvement and plans were made to include the project in the next budget, but to undertake work immediately, and have the project completed before the next rainy season, the commission will finance the work from current budget funds.

UCLA Librarian Heads CARE Book Committee
Lawrence Clark Powell, UCLA chief librarian, will serve as Western States chairman of the CARE book program, it was announced by the CARE office today.
To seek contributions for technical and scientific books to go to devastated libraries and schools overseas, Dr. Powell will soon appoint representatives from eleven western states to form his CARE Book Committee.
Recently elected member of the American Library Association, Council and President-elect of the California Library Association, Dr. Powell has served as chief librarian of UCLA, University Library and Director, William Andrews Clark Memorial Library since 1944. Author of numerous literary critiques, he writes the monthly column "Of Western Books and Writers" for Westways Magazine and is a frequent contributor to literary, historical, and library periodicals.
"War destruction and book-burning vandalism has left Europe starved for technical 'know-how,'" Dr. Powell stated, "and the CARE Book Program will give every American a chance to bring 'Food to Hungry Minds' in the same humanitarian way they have helped starved and ill people."
He urged all contributions to the CARE Book Program be sent to CARE, 217 West Ninth street, Los Angeles.

Supplies of available school clothing at Salvation Army Salvage stores have dwindled to an alarming degree and the Salvation Army Social Service department serving this area is in urgent need of another 50,000 pieces of children's wearing apparel to meet the need, according to Brigadier Fred Ohrn, director of Salvation Army social service centers in southern California. The Brigadier emphasized the pressing need for all kinds of furniture, especially kitchen, dining room and bedroom furniture.
Due to the sudden rise in un-employment occasioned by the closing of shipyards and industrial plants a great number of men will be in need of assistance until regular employment can be found. "The greater the inflow of salvage materials to our workshops the greater will be the number of men we can employ as practically all salvage items must be refurbished and refinished, and this process creates work and wages," said Ohrn.
With the coming of fall and colder weather and the current unemployment situation, the charity load and actual give-aways will greatly increase for the Salvation Army social service department.
Red Shield trucks will call at home or office to pick up discards if residents will telephone Anaheim 4631.
Samples of brass wire more than 2,000 years old have been discovered, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica.
A 1948 Supreme Court ruling stated that passengers in automobiles are immune to search without a warrant, according to the Britannica Book of the Year.

now premature migration to San Joaquin valley cotton areas is leaving other sectors short, but no serious shortages are anticipated.
The record cotton harvest is expected to employ more than 100,000 persons by November peak and an adequate labor supply is expected. Cool weather has retarded what threatened to prove an early cotton season and peaks in other crops will be past by the time cotton picking begins.
