France has a resiliency which shows now more than ever before. Perhaps if you lived in a nation which has been a battleground since the beginning of recorded history, you'd take war not cheerfully but at least in stride. General North, who once wrote an article on that subject tells me that the city of Soissons, familiar to my World War I comrades, has been besieged or fought for 34 times.
I have seen Paris in 5 different years between 1913 and now, and 1944 about a month after the "liberation," was the only time it looked dead without movement, and life.
There has been little time so far for pleasure. We did get to the old Opera House, and heard Boris Godounov. On the 23rd we came through the modern boat station at Havre quite early, and reached Paris by noon. We came across the Normandy farm area, but it has been terribly dry, the day we landed had the first rain for months. Fortunately, Normandy doesn't have to depend on the Bureau of Reclamation, as the Coachella must. It is raining now.
Walnut Pickings Rates Adopted
Walnut picking rates for county this season were adopted by the Intercountrysut Department of the Farrau.
The rates are the same omitted last year but things per day and for them will be much greater this because of the much larger says farm advisor Harold Berg.
The following rates are amended by the walnut placement: For shaking, pickling hulling,$1.40 per standard sack; for picking and hulling cents per sack; for shaking picking,70 cents per sack picking only,50 cents per sack picking conditions and they are to be filled level full ing to committee recommendations.
There are 2,321 acres off in Orange county according year's county agricultural The production in Orange last year was reported at pounds with a value of $ to the grower. The present appears to be about double year's which was only 850 per acre. The average walnuts per acre in Orange in recent years has been approximately 1,000 pounds acre as revealed in court reports.

State’s Farm Crop May Exceed Previous Levels
Sacramento, (WNS)—Estimates that the combined production of farm products in California this year may equal or exceed the high levels of recent years were confirmed today by the state department of agriculture.
The estimates applies to field, fruit and vegetable crops, as well as to meats, milk and poultry, said A. A. Brock, director of the department.
He added that the present high level is being maintained despite the adverse effects of below normal rainfall for several years.
Brock said that concern is increasing among irrigators over the underground water supplies of the state, which year by year are lowering.
In the face of abundant production, he pointed out that prices of most farm products continue to decline, especially with regard to major fruit crops, some vegetables, and other crops. In some instances, prices have declined to critically low levels, and there is no doubt he said, that a considerable quantity of fruit this year will not be placed on the market.
The heavy price declines he said affect the economy of the agricultural industry in the state, and several emergency steps have been taken to enable growers to receive returns at least equal to production costs.
LONG VALENCIA SEASON
Contrary to earlier expectations, the packing and shipping of California Valencias this year will continue through November, according to Mutual Orange Distributors. Normally the Valencia seasons closes about the end of October.
Walnut Picking Rates Adopted
Walnut picking rates for Orange county this season were recently adopted by the Intercounty Walnut Department of the Farm Bureau.
The rates are the same as recommended last year, but the earnings per day and for the season will be much greater this season because of the much larger crop, says farm advisor Harold E. Wahlberg.
The following rates are recommended by the walnut department: For shaking, picking and hulling, $1.40 per standard barley sack; for picking and hulling, 85 cents per sack; for shaking and picking, 70 cents per sack; for picking only, 50 cents per sack.
These rates apply to normal picking conditions and the sacks are to be filled level full, according to committee recommendations.
There are 2,321 acres of walnuts in Orange county according to last year's county agricultural report. The production in Orange county last year was reported at 1,884,000 pounds with a value of $360,630 to the grower. The present crop appears to be about double of last year's which was only 850 pounds per acre. The average yield of walnuts per acre in Orange county in recent years has been approximately 1,000 pounds per acre, as revealed in county crop reports.
Pay is received for each weekly meeting attended—meetings usually about two hours long and held during spare time so as not to interfere with an individual's working hours.
Complete information concerning these two programs is available at any navy recruiting station or naval reserve training center.

Boxes in which citrus fruits are shipped to market required approximately 185 million board feet of lumber to move the California-Arizona citrus crops last year, according to Mutual Orange Distributors. This amount of lumber would build approximately 19,000 five-room houses of average size.

Local and County Churches Aid Displaced Persons
The Grace Lutheran church of this city is among the Lutheran churches in Orange county who are aiding in the work of rehabilitating the displaced persons brought to this county through the Lutheran Council.
So far more than one hundred displaced men from Estonia and Latvia have been brought here. These men are a fine type, all single and about twenty-five years of age. They were taken from their homes when they were young and forced into slave labor for the Nazis in Germany. They have lost contact with their families and, for fear of the Russians, cannot go back to their homes. Thus they are really displaced persons. They expect to stay in the United States and will be eligible for citizenship in three years.
At present they are quartered in prisons and an old school building on Atwood, living with the Mexican Nationals, spending their days picking oranges. These young men served as guards for the American Army in Germany and can speak a little English and a little better German.
The Lutheran churches of the county are arranging transportation to church each Sunday and a great number of the church members are inviting these young men into their homes for good meals and providing Sunday diversion for them. They are hoping to find good jobs for them at the close of the fruit season so that they can support themselves and be able to establish their homes here.
