GROWTH OF POLIO CARE TEAM
1938 1949
Medical care for polio patients is costing the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis more money than ever before—because better treatment is available today than formerly, as the accompanying chart reveals. Until 1938 when the National Foundation was formed, a physician and a nurse usually comprised the best available care. Today, modern polio treatment may include 13 specialized services, provided by an entire TEAM of professional workers. This expanded care has cost National Foundation Chapters millions in March of Dimes funds. More money is needed immediately to continue these services. Support the POLIO EPIDEMIC EMERGENCY DRIVE to help care for today's polio patients. Send your contribution now to POLIO, care of your local Post Office.
VALENCIAS EXPORTED
Exports of Southern California Valencia oranges to the end of August this year totalled 1,312 cars, Mutual Orange Distributors reports. At the same time last year 2,380 carloads of Valencias had been sent from California to foreign markets.
In December, the Los Angeles Stock Exchange will observe the fiftieth anniversary of its founding in 1899.
Over ten million shares of stock having a value of $141,675,008 were traded on the Los Angeles Stock Exchange in 1948.
CHEMICAL TESTS REVEAL COUNTY SOIL IS NEUTRAL
Most all of Orange county agricultural soils are neutral in chemical reaction. This is shown in a new University of California bulletin written by Ralph C. Cole. The title of the publication is "Reaction of California Soils."
A. H. Holland, assistant farm advisor, announces that the publication is available at the Agricultural extension service office, 1104 W. 8th street, Santa Ana, and anyone desiring a copy can receive one from there by request.
It briefly discusses soil reaction and how it should be considered in the choice of crops and in the selection and use of soil amendments and fertilizers. The bulletin discusses these subjects in a seme-technical manner.
The main purpose of the bulletin though, is to supply long-needed information on the distribution of acid and basic soils in California and the relation to soil series and to soil-forming factors such as climate, rock material and drainage.
The soil reaction map of the south coastal section of the state shows that in a considerable area of San Diego the soils are moderately to strongly acid. The mapped area for Orange county, however, shows only a small area which has soils which are acid, and these are rated as slightly acid.

Million to View County Exhibit At Pomona Fair
Over a million people will view the beautifully artistic feature display entered by Orange county during the 17 days of the 22nd annual Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona, September 16 through October 2.
This year, more than ever before, the varied products of industrial developments and possibilities of the county will be emphasized in the dramatic panorama arranged. The exhibit occupies a prominent place in the huge palace of agriculture located in the center of the 400-acre exposition park.
A new classification this year permitting competitive entries of the native woods of the state gives opportunity for a much more comprehensive display of the resources of the northern part of the state. Fifty counties and communities

Oppose Rural Inclusion in Tax Districts
Concern over one of the age-old causes of bankruptcy for farmers and the possibility that it might catch a good many of the farmers of Orange county has caused the directors of the Orange County Farm Bureau to warn its membership and other farmers of the county "to be alert to their rights to exclusions from districts impowered to levy and collect taxes and assessments" and stating that the Farm Bureau will "actively oppose any involuntary inclusion of farm property in such districts established with the stated purpose of providing services which would not be usable or of value to such rural property."
According to executive secretary C. J. Marks, the directors apparently had no particular district in mind in considering the action, but have found themselves continually faced with problems during the past several years due to the encroachment of the metropolitan area upon the rural properties in the greater Los Angeles and coastal sections.

ed purpose of providing services which would not be usable or of value to such rural property."
According to executive secretary C. J. Marks, the directors apparently had no particular district in mind in considering the action, but have found themselves continually faced with problems during the past several years due to the encroachment of the metropolitan area upon the rural properties in the greater Los Angeles and coastal sections.
In forming local sanitary districts, water districts, lighting districts and other types of civic improvements, the farmers point out, lines of the districts are quite frequently established according to some present school district or other area which may or may not have any relationship to the possibility of the area included being able to use the new service within a period of many years.
"While the farmers are aware of the rapid growth of communities in southern California, they want to be sure that reasonable and well-considered plans be made before outlying districts for various purposes," stated Marks.
"The nation is full of examples of rural and city properties which have been lost to their original owners because they were included involuntarily within an area which became heavily taxed for a facility which was of no value to them, and we want to reduce that situation to a minimum in our area as a benefit to the whole economy of the county," he states.
ICED CITRUS SHIPMENTS
During the summer months California citrus fruits shipped to market under standard refrigeration are re-iced on an average of once every 24 hours while enroute, reports Mutual Orange Distributors.
Being in a rut or in a groove may sound alike but there's a big difference.
