Guard Seeks
543 Recruits
Two thousand five hundred and forty-three men or else! was the word that went today to 108 units of southern California's 40th Infantry Division.
Maj. Gen. Daniel H. Hudelson, division commander, ordered a month-long recruiting drive to bring the National Guard division closer to its authorized peacetime manpower allotment.
Each company and battery was instructed to enroll 20 men within a month. Responsibility for success of the campaign was placed on regimental and separate battalion adjutants and soldiers working under their supervision on full-time duty.
45 Cities
The 40th, largest military organization in the southland—regular or reserve—has units in 45 cities in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Diego counties.
The city of Los Angeles, with 160th Infantry regiment, and Division Special Troops and Artillery Headquarters, has the largest troop contingent.
Enlistments are being made for three years and involve attendance at 48 two-hour weekly training sessions and one 15-day field training encampment per year.
In many instances, Army, Navy and Marine Corps veterans may enlist in ratings held at the time of their discharge. Pay is at regular service rates, a full day's pay being allowed for each weekly drill. Rental and ration allowances are authorized in addition to base pay for summertime active duty.
Additional information may be obtained at local armories.
