Crater Lake Deepest In Hemisphere Motorists who make their way northward from California and drive through the Cascade Mountains of southern Oregon will find some eighty miles northeast of Medford, the deepest lake in the western hemisphere: Crater Lake. Almost a hundred years have passed, reports the National Automobile Club, since white men first came across this lake of startling blue. In 1853 a party of Californians moved into Oregon in search for the fabulous Lost Cabin Mine. When the locals learned of this search they set out in pursuit. Some time later, after a good deal of walking and splitting up of parties, supplies began to run low and the Californians and Oregonians joined forces to work together for survival. It was shortly after this union of their forces that they happened upon Crater Lake. And what they saw must have given them cause to wonder. Far below them lay a great mass of water nearly six miles across and so mysteriously deep that its shades of blue ran all the way from the faintest of turquoise to the deepest ultramarine. From the water's edge rose giant cliffs of lava rock, worn and carved by the wind and weather through the long ages and rising in some places to a height or more than 2,000 feet. On the southern rim And what they saw must have given them cause to wonder. On the southern rim jutted up that ragged mass of lava, at times disappearing in the slanting light, at times taking on the appearance of a ship in full sail, that has since come to be known as the Phantom Ship. And over on the west lay Wizard Island, a little cone bearing silent evidence to the violent volcanic action that had once been there. Since the discovery of the lake many geologists have visited it and, after examination, have come to their conclusions as to how it was formed. According to their findings, Mount Mazama, an old fire mountain that was probably 12,000 feet high, blew five thousand feet of its summit into the sky in a cataclysmic eruption. The gaping hole that was left filled in with snow water to form the lake. Today the fires have burned down and all is peaceful beauty. Today the lake is the central attraction in a National Park that covers almost 250 square miles, offers full facilities for tourists during the travel season, and natural spectacles for visitors all the year round.
