11 Anaheim Gazette, Thursday, August 18, 1949 Studying World Bank at First Hand In three years the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, one of U.N.'s Specialized Agencies, has received hundreds of visitors, but few have shown more interest in the Bank's operations than a group of 32 students from eleven countries which recently visited the Bank. S. on American Field Service scholarships. GIANT SUNFLOWER EXHIBITED HERE WED. A. S. Moore of Yorba Linda was in the Gazette office Wednesday morning with a giant sunflower that had bloomed and seeded. The flower measured 19 inches across with a girth of 57 inches. Mr. Moore stated the stem on which the blossom grew was 12 feet tall. In discussing the seeds of that species of sunflower, he stated that the Russian people used the seed as a staple food product, whereas in our country, the seeds are used as feed for various birds, particularly parrots. Isn't it amazing how many family problems are aired in taverns? State Aids 45 GI Students in County Colleges Sacramento (WNS)—State aid extended veterans in Orange county during the spring school semester totaled $9,098.17, the State Department of Veterans Affairs reported today. The Department extended aid to 45 veterans in three Orange county schools as follows: Fullerton Junior college, 27, $5,-388.95; Orange Coast Junior college, 7, $1,583.86; Santa Ana Junior college, 11, $2,125.36. The state aids veterans who have exhausted their educational benefits under GI rights, but who have not completed their education. R. E. Bacon's Father Passes Saturday Ernest C. Bacon, 83 years of age of Los Angeles, father of R. E. Bacon, of Santa Ana, manager of Southern California Edison Company for this area, passed away at his home last Saturday after suffering a heart attack. A former newspaper man, he was owner and founder of the Ouray Herald, Ouray, Colorado retiring 35 years ago. Survivors other than R. E. Bacon, are his wife; one daughter; three sons and a brother. North St. Phone 4284 Propose Hospital For Alcoholics In Southland Sacramento, (WNS)—Two state hospitals, one in northern California and one in the south, were recommended by the special crime study commission on adult corrections and release procedures, to combat alcoholism. In its final report, the commission said the two hospitals should serve as research and demonstration centers in the care and treatment of alcoholics. The commission also recommended that the state should make it the duty of the state department of public health and give it the resources to study alcoholism as a health problem. A third recommendation suggested an interdepartmental committee to assist the department of health to carry out its functions and responsibilities. Control Beverages As to alcoholic beverage control, the commission said provisions for a comprehensive objective study of the entire problem of the public control and regulation of alcoholic beverages in California is needed. On the subject of jails, the commission said improvement in physical conditions is needed as well as improvements in the administration and operation of county and municipal jails. A recommendation for reduction of the number of persons currently being handled in the jails through more adequate means of treating alcoholics, limiting use of local jails to brief confinements.
