McCarthy's rise to the presidency of Alpha Beta Food Markets, Inc., is a typical American success story. A long time resident of Orange, California, McCarthy first started with Alpha Beta in 1919 as a meat cutter in the Santa Ana store. His next stop was meat manager of the Orange store, and while still there he took a directorship in the company, later gaining the position of meat supervisor. When the company purchased its own packing plant in 1935, the natural selection as manager was the man who knew the meat business inside out—Rav McCarthy. In 1939 the directors started looking for a company president, someone who had the ability to work with labor and management together. Again the obvious selection was Ray McCarthy, and for the past 10 years he has held that important spot, commuting back and forth between the company offices in Vernon and his home in Orange. As company president he is not only concerned with looking after company business as a whole, but also has charge of labor relations and company equipment. U. S. Offers High Bonus Payments For Uranium Sacramento, (WNS.)—The Federal government's efforts to locate new deposits of uranium have extended to an offer of high bonus payments, the state division of mines has announced. The United States Atomic Energy Commission, the division said, has announced a three point program to stimulate discovery and increase production of domestic uranium, which can be used in the atomic bomb. In addition to a guarantee on minimum prices for a ten-year period covering refined uranium oxide, high-grade uranium ore, and uranium concentrates, the commission offers a bonus of $10,000 for each discovery leading to production of ore to the amount of 20 short tomes, assaying 20 or more percent. gram to stimulate discovery and increase production of domestic uranium, which can be used in the atomic bomb. The division of mines in its information service has issued a description of the ore, describing it as "spotty" and irregularly distributed in scattered and usually relatively small deposits. "Prospecting in all localities," the division said, "an important factor even after commercial development has begun. Ore bodies are easily recognizable if they crop out, but more often, they do not crop out and the search for ore involves a careful study of the geological conditions. "The patchy nature of uranium ore deposits precludes the adoption of large scale mining. Gophering seems to be the most economical means of mining." Charles G.
