SPORTS By BOB FUNSETH The casting for cutthroat in the Yellowstone River was a thrilling experience as was the netting of herring in Nova Scotia and the catching of shark in the Bay of Bengal—but none of these compare with the hunting for the green phosphorus glow of the sardine with Santiago Sardiz beyond Todos Santos Island in Mexico. Santiago is the captain of the purse-seiner "Marino"—a 43 foot boat belonging to the Sauzal fishing cannery, which is located a few miles north of Ensenada. He is a Spanish refugee and before escaping to Mexico was the captain of a fishing boat in Barcelona. Last Sunday evening I was on the flying bridge of the "Marino" when it sailed from its mooring to the sardine grounds some six or seven miles out to sea. Green Wakes It was a dark, overcast evening with only the soft green light of the phosphorus from our bow and stern penetrating the darkness. Off our bow the green wakes of escorting fish cast wierd streaks in the ocean. In about an hour we reached an island beyond and to the north of Todos Santas and came upon several huge bright green circles—ranging from 50 to 100 yards in diameter. Off to the starboard the green-lit surf was beating against the rocks—warning of the danger present. Santiago maneuvered the "Marino" between the schools of fish and the shore. He explained that the fish—once they are aware of the net will dash for the safety of open side and freedom. In a few short moments the circle was completed—the trap was closed. With the aid of a winch, the net was hauled in and the diameter of the circular trap was reduced. As it became smaller, the intensity of the green glow of the fish became brighter although softened somewhat by the bright working lights of the boat. What a Dip-Net! In about a half-hour the arc had been diminished to about 18 feet. The dingy formed one side and the "Marino" the other. An over-size dip net, capable of taking 500 pounds of fish in one scoop was secured to the gaff and hoisted over the side. The crewman in the dingy dipped the net into the water and the harvest was on! By this time other boats had come on the scene and were hastily repeating our operations. But the "Marino" had got the cream and only skim milk remained. In less than an hour the work had been completed and 25 tons of slithering sardines were in the hold of the "Marino." In eight hours they would be where most of us think of them—in the can. Hal Gregg Ties Willowick Record Harold “Skeets” Gregg tied course record at the Willow links in Santa Ana last Saturday when he shot a six-under-pointer. Gregg had no fives on his hand as he scored seven birdies to tie the record set by Jack Davenport and tied by Frank McCann year. Skeets fired a 32-33. He retired from baseball after a great year with Monroe. He won 18 games for Brooklyn in 1945 and pitched in the W Series against the Yanks. Anaheim Junior Leaguers Beat Brea, 13-6 The all-star Anaheim J League “A” team defeated 13 to 6 last evening on the leagues diamond. Paul Salazar was on mound for Anaheim and all only four hits. Anaheim scored 5 runs in first inning on the opposing wildness. In third the J scored on a walk and a single Sunny Austin. They really ered the boom in the fourth seven Anaheim runs crossed plate on walks and singles Charles Flynn, George Bishop Sunny Austin. The Trap Is Closed The dingy was cast off from the stern with a man aboard and one end of the net attached. Then at full speed and with the rudder hard over, the "Marino" began encircling the green mass of sardine. When about half of the circle had been inscribed, Santiago began flashing a light on the water to seaward of the fish providing a target for one of the crewmen to toss rocks—scaring the fish and causing them to swim towards the encircling net rather than to the dingy dipped the net into the water and the harvest was on! The lights went out and we began searching again. We finally came to a sizable glow and started repeating our earlier operations. When about half of our net had been let out, a herd of 12 sea lions broke into our pasture to get their oats—scattering our dense green glow into a mass of darting smaller circles. The Gold Is Lost Santiago's light hardly went out as he ordered rock after rock dropped in a vain attempt to stop the fleeing sardine. When it became apparent that most of our catch was getting away he shouted, "El oro sea perdido" (i.e. The arrangement complements insurance to cover mahere this month, the markhope to hold their first shootion at the new range in AuAnother proposed competition will be inter-club five-matches every Friday night at high school armory. Our catch of what had hoped to be 15 tons was reduced to 6 giving us a total load of 30 tons—15 tons short of the ton capacity of the "Marino." We searched the seas for a half-hour but we could not find the large tell-tale glow of a quality of sardine and so with reluctance Santiago headed "Marino" for home. The over was lifting and the soft twinkle of the stars became visible. The narrow streaks of the dine off our bow were disturbed by the large light of an occasional corbina: As we neared the harbor Santiago, in summing up the ning's hunt, said, "El gulfo me e servido me (The gulf or bay had served better). That's the opinion of wardens the Division of Fish and Game, who have just revealed their annual advance predictions of hunting conditions. "No Trespassing" Besides hunting for deer, many of California's 300,000 buck hunters will probably be hunting for a place to hunt. Wardens are unanimous in reporting a new crop of "No Trespassing" signs, and warning coastal area hunters to obtain permission from landowners before entering private property. From August 7 to September 15, inclusive, a bag limit of two bucks will be legal in Mendicino, Lake Glenn, Colusa, Yolo, Napa, Solano, Sonoma, Marin, Contra Costa, Alameda, San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Benito, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, and Orange counties, and westerly portions of San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Fresno, Kings, Kern and Riverside counties.
