A university president has defined faith as that which fortifies us to meet the inevitabilities of life and to withstand anything that can happen to us. When Jesus was facing the cross, which meant shame, ignominy, and death, His final word was one of good cheer—"I have overcome the world."
The Church nurtures our faith. Why not accept the invitation and COME TO CHURCH NEXT SUNDAY?
—Rev. D. Carl Yoder.
Our Preacher Says
Is it our duty to help everybody who needs help? The answer is time, wisdom, and strength, and if we undertake to help everybody, we shall soon be helping nobody. We need to be guided by the principle to help those first who need help most and go down the line as far as possible. Catalogue the list, such as those who are discouraged and need a word of cheer, those who are tempted and need a guide, those who are seeking to live at their best but are faltering, those in sorrow, the sick, the aged. But, "help somebody today."

Careless Handling Of Matches Causes Most Forest Fires
Sacramento, (WNS.) — Careless handling of matches and tobacco is the top cause of California’s 1,880 forest fires occurring since January 1, 1949 through June 30, the state forestry department disclosed today.
A survey of fire causes revealed tobacco and matches account for 32 percent of all forest blazes. The next most frequent cause is careless burning of trash, which accounts for 20.4 percent of forest fires.
The survey results also debunk some widely believed facts about fires. The area adjacent to highways is not the spot where most fires originate. The study shows most forest fires are caused close to dwellings and spread into remote areas.
Transients passing through forest and brush areas are not responsible for these fires for the survey reveals that persons living in the immediate area of the blaze cause 68 percent of the fires. Transients cause only 10.2 per cent with the remaining blazes resulting from lightning and other non-human causes.
In the same category, the forestry department concluded that incendiarists are not responsible for the bulk of fires. The account for a lowly 3.6 percent who dren playing with matches an estimated 7.7 percent blazes.
The lumbering industry with a clean bill of health ing only 2.3 percent of its spite year-round operation ber-and brush land.
Spontaneous combustion destroyer of urban dwelling found to be minor cause in brush fires. Only 1.5% of all fires could be traced cause.

Art Festival Press Preview
Heralding the premier presentation of the 1949 Pageant of the Masters at Laguna Beach Festival of Arts a press preview was featured last Thursday evening. The famous "living pictures" in Irvine Bowl were viewed by the general public Saturday night and will continue showings, with the exception of Monday nights, through August 14.
Photographers from top Los Angeles syndicates as well as Orange county were present at the preview. "Program A," one of three varied groups of tableaux, was given. Although not present that night, the festival ensemble, directed by Cleo Allen Hibbs, is playing encores, finale and background music for the regular programs.
The festival grounds will be open nightly through August 14. Numerous art forms, many of which find expression in Laguna Beach, will be displayed at the fourteenth annual event.
Russell Iredell is festival president and chairman of eight hardworking members of the board of directors.

Many Visitors At Padua Hills
Large numbers of summer tourists to the southland, including visitors from foreign lands, are attending performances of "El Limoncito," being offered currently at the Padua Hills theater located at the picturesque foothill playhouse near Claremont.
The play plus the Jamaica outdoor carnival are being staged Wednesday through Saturday evenings, and Wednesday and Saturday afternoon, through August 20.
The comedy has as its setting a limeade stand at Hermosillo in Mexico.
Among those signing the guest register recently were M. Nielsen, Copenhagen, Denmark; M. C. Dickson, Armadale, Scotland; Samuel Lee and Alvin Kaleolani, Honolulu; Ingrid Rauley, Stockholm, Sweden; Mrs. Mary Merola, Naples, Italy; and Elena Bravo Seguro and Aurora Bravo Robles, of Guadalajara, Mexico.
Interesting groups to enjoy a matinee theatre party during the past week included 31 students and teachers of the fourth grade University Demonstration School of the Department of Education of the University of California at Los Angeles. The group, under the supervision of Mrs. Dorothy Tait, is making an intensive study of Mexican customs, songs and dances.
The university visitors were particularly intrigued by the live-ly songs and dances of the State of Sonora interpolated in the action of the play and forming the opening program of the Jamaica carnival in the patio, which features novel Mexican games and refreshments.

The lumbering industry came off with a clean bill of health causing only 2.3 percent of fires despite year-round operation in timber and brush land.
Spontaneous combustion, the destroyer of urban dwellings, was found to be minor cause in starting brush fires. Only 1.5 percent of all fires could be traced to this cause.
