County Artists Enter State Fair Competition Sacramento, July 28.—Four artists and craftsmen from Orange county have submitted entries for competition in the arts and crafts show at the California State Fair, in Sacramento, September 1 through 11. Entries announced by Ned Green, secretary-manager of the fair, are: David A. Vaughan, Costa Mesa, oil painting; Joan Irving Brandt, Corona del Mar, water color; Rex Brandt, Corona del Mar, water color; Everett W. Macdonald, Laguna Beach, jewelry. Exceed Last Year Exceeding the number last year, eight hundred seventy exhibitors from 40 counties of the state have sent in 1,332 entries in arts and crafts, oils, water colors, and prints will be displayed in the gigantic open air show. All selections in crafts will be exhibited in the Arts building, formerly the Home Economics building, which serves as the main entrance to the huge open area. Exhibitors will be competing for cash awards of $6,100 in the art division and $3,330 for crafts. Prizes for oils—conservative and modern—are: first, $1,000, second, $500; and third, $250. For water colors—first, $500; second, $300, and third, $200. Sculpture, first, $500 and a gold medal; second, $300 and a silver medal; third, $200 and a bronze medal. Prints—first, $300; second, $200; third, $100. Prizes in each section of crafts are: first, $50; second $40; their ABC's. Throughout the state, the report said, there are a total of 1,933,-196 students in all classes from kindergarten to grade 14, including special classes in elementary and high schools. Los Angeles county led the state in the number of pupils undergoing training with 730,049, a jump of 44,606 from the 1948 school year. European Nations To Stage Exhibits At State Fair Sacramento—Ned Green, secretary-manager, announced in Sacramento today that four European nations and Malta will have exhibits at the 1949 California State Fair, September 1 through September 11. Norway, France, England, Switzerland and Malta will show their displays on the mezzanine of the Agriculture Building. England will stress travel in its display which will feature models of the liners Queen Mary and Princess Elizabeth which ply between New York and Liverpool. The island of Malta, where the Knights of St. John formed a bulwark against the spread of Turkish influence in Europe in the 15th century, and which stood firm under the terrific bombing of Germany and Italy in World War II, will show its famous laces. An expert will give daily demonstrations in lace manufacture. Norway, which exhibited last year, will display many products for which it is famous along with scenes of its picturesque fjords. The members of the jury for the art division are: Yasuo Kuniyoshi, New York City; Edward Biberman, Hollywood; Reginald Poland, San Diego; Louis Siegriest Oakland, and Abel G. Warshawsky, Monterey. Members of the crafts division jury are: Charles Lindstrom, San Francisco; Richard B. Petterson, Claremont; Herbert Sanders, San Jose; Constance Tydeman, San Francisco; and Peter Maccherine, San Francisco. Outstanding artists and craftsmen of the nation's best have entered a record number of paintings, prints, sculpture, and handicrafts to be displayed in an atmosphere of beauty and inspiration to make the 1949 Art Show the greatest ever held at the state fair. Enrollment in State’s Schools Increases 136,387 Sacramento, (WNS) — California schools logged an increase in enrollment of 136,387 students this year over 1948, to make a total of approximately two million students in grade schools alone, the state department of education reported today. Orange county had 43,695 students in its grade schools during the school year just ended, as compared to 45,398 during the preceding year.
