SPORTS Top Sprinters Clash in $10,000 Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar Del Mar, July 28—(Special)—Colorful Del Mar swings down thoroughbred lane to its first stakes offering of the young season here Saturday when top drawer sprinters clash in the $10,000 added Bing Crosby Handicap at six furlongs. This will mark the fourth running of the stake named in honor of Del Mar’s founder and one of the most beloved sporstmen in the world today, and, appropriately enough, all indications point to the most classpacked field in the stake’s history awaiting Starter William Mills’ word. Among the candidates for Saturday’s sprint test is William Goetz’ Muchingo, a South American import who won his only in this country last week. Muchingo, a strapping speedster from the land of the Pappas, was sold early this week to Goetz by Juan Correas, the man who brought him to the United States. Such familiar favorites as Bymeabond, Tropical Sea, Phantom Sea, Lycos, Mrs. Rabbit, Precession and Top’s Boy also are being pointed for the Bing Crosby, and their morning trials verify that they are ready for the big question. Del Mar swung open its gates Tuesday for its 10th anniversary racing season before a representative first day audience of nearly early this week to Goetz by Juan Correas, the man who brought him to the United States. Such familiar favorites as Bymeabond, Tropical Sea, Phantom Sea, Lycos, Mrs. Rabbit, Precession and Top's Boy also are being pointed for the Bing Crosby, and their morning trials verify that they are ready for the big question. Del Mar swung open its gates Tuesday for its 10th anniversary racing season before a representative first day audience of nearly 10,000 patrons who came to welcome racing back where the turf meets the surf. This turnout prompted Messrs. Joseph M. Schenck and Jay Paley majority stockholders in the track, to predict that the 41-day season would more than hold its own and would be crowned with success. Jones; Salas Fight Main At Hollywood Harold "Baby Face" Jones, hero of two tremendous bouts against Enrique Bolanos and Art Aragan, returns to Hollywood Legion Stadium Friday night. He'll box the ten round main event against Charlie Salas, at 140 pounds. This will be the second meeting between the two boys. Just one year ago, Jones took a split verdict from the Arizona Mexi-can. Since then, Salas has run up an impressive total of 17 wins including a first leg on the State Welterweight Elimination Tourney. Jones thrilled a near capacity crowd at Hollywood recently when he stood toe to toe with Aragon for ten full rounds, losing a sensational and close battle to the talented "Golden Boy." Originally from Detroit, Harold is out to establish residence in southern California hopeful of gaining a shot at the State Light-weight title in the near future. Salas will be risking all the prestige he has accumulated to date in his bout with Jones. The crafty boxer from Phoenix, though a mere 21 years old, is considered one of the outstanding young fighters on the Pacific coast. He seems certain to ascend the 147 lb. throne of this state, having already annexed the title for his home state. Nevertheless, he'll probably be the underdog among the odds makers in his fight against Jones Friday night. In Humboldt and Del Norte counties, game wardens report the herds in good condition having recovered from the severe winter but reduced in numbers from the 1948 season. In Mendocino and Lake counties, deer are reported "not as plentiful as in the past" but in territory adjacent to the Colusa county line, apparently there has been no loss from a winter kill. In Modoc and Lassen counties there is no report as to numbers but "a good crop of fawns" is noted in the Burney area. Feed in the general area east of Shasta and Siskiyou county lines is plentiful but supplies in Tehama and parts of Shasta counties are not up to normal. Deer are reported in quantity in southern sections of the state. All herds have been found in good condition with no disease reported. More deer perished in the San Bernardino mountains during last winter's heavy snows than was originally estimated. However, additional areas in the Los Padres National Forest will be opened to hunting this year and a heavier kill is expected.
