Del Mar Summer Race Meet Opens Tues. with $5000 Inaugural Handicap
Del Mar, July 21—A sure sign the vacation season is at hand comes Tuesday with the gala opening of the tenth anniversary Del Mar summer race meeting—the famed sports center “where the turf meets the surf.”
Celebrities from every walk of life and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fan will gather to welcome spirited thoroughbreds and star jockeys for a 41-day whirl.
First post time Tuesday, and throughout the season, will be 1:30 p.m.
Enjoy Great Meet
From all indications, Del Mar will enjoy one of its greatest meetings. Advance applications for stable space insure the finest line-up of horses in history. Practically every topflight stable participating in the Hollywood Park at Santa Anita program, which closes Saturday, will be on hand here.
Among the many big name steeds expected to see action are On Trust, Pedigree, Dinner Gong, Roman In, Hubble Bubble, Pretal, Bymeabond, Brave Fox, Drumbeat, Fleet Rings and scores more.
Sweeping changes have been made in accommodating racegoers in all areas, principally in the clubhouse and paddock. And increased eating facilities of a high order will be in vogue.
$5000 Inaugural Handicap
Opening day fans will be greeted by Miss Surf Girl of Del Mar, the lovely Lorelle Owen, and will watch a fine field of 3 year olds.
Haffield and Lakes Win in Junior League
Haffield Cleaners pulled a rabbit's foot and a game out of the bag last night in Junior League action as they beat Kaulbars 7-5 in a contest which went three extra innings.
In the bottom half of the seventh Kaulbars had the bases loaded with two out and a 3 and 0 count on the batter. The man on second took to wandering and was caught off by Masterson ending the inning and the threat.
Then in true form Hatfields bounced back in the top half of the eighth to score a brace of tallies on a single by Elmore Clamp, an error, a walk and an infield out.

Opening day fans will be greeted by Miss Surf Girl of Del Mar, the lovely Lorelle Owen, and will watch a fine field of 3-year-olds go postward in the $5000 Inaugural Handicap. This event, at six furlongs, will likely attract such established stars as Charles S. Howard’s Blue Dart, King and Luellwitz’s Moonrush, Marshanna Ranch’s Terry’s Man, White Star Stable’s Star Fiddle, W. D. Rorex’s Rhodes Bull, Abe Hirschberg’s Bolero and C. H. Jones & Sons’ June Bride.
These outstanding steeds will be shooting for a lucrative lineup of 10 stakes, headed by the $15,000 added Del Mar Futurity, which will gross close to $40,000 when it is run Sept. 3, and the $15,000 added Del Mar Derby for 3-year-olds.
Top Jockeys
All of the Far West’s leading jockeys are planning campaigns here including Champion Johnny Longden, Jack Westrope, Walter Litzenberg, Ralph Neves, Johnny Adams, Carroll Bierman, Frank Chojnacki, Merlin Volzke, Jimmy Nichols, Arlin Bassett, Ferril Zufelt, Nick Combest and the apprentice stars—Glen Lasswell and Billy Shoemaker.
Innovations abound at the “turf-surf” course this year, fronted by the inauguration at southern California tracks of the daily double, which will hold forth on the first and second races.
“Most sportsmen are far more vociferous in their criticism of constituted authority for failure to act vigorously and wisely in behalf of our woods, waters and wildlife, than in presenting sound reasons for such action and making it crystal clear that they expect it to be taken.”—Glenn L. Martin, airplane manufacturer.
Sign New Coach At Fullerton
Walter C. Lunsford, former track coach of the University of Washington Frosh and athletic coach of high schools at Centralia and Shelton, Washington, was engaged this week as a member of the faculty of Fullerton Union high school, T. Stanley Warburton, district superintendent, announced today.
Lunsford received his Bachelor and Master's degrees from the University of Washington and attended the Naval Academy at Annapolis for officers' indoctrination in 1942. During the last war he coached athletics in pre-flight schools for the Navy. He was director of Community Recreation at Shelton, Washington, and a sportcaster on the Washington radio. In college Lunsford was outstanding in track, football, and basketball.
Lunsford was born in Columbus, Ohio, 38 years ago, is married, and has two children.
Got the Fee But Can’t Find A Suitable Tag
Sacramento (WNS) — California pheasant hunters who will be faced with a new state imposed tag fee for hunting privileges during the 1949 season may take some comfort in the fact that the Division of Fish and Game is having difficult time finding a suitable tag.
Under provisions of a bill signed by the governor, pheasant hunters will pay $1 for sufficient tags to cover a season’s legal bag limit. The bill was easily made law but development of a proper tag was not as easily done.
H. It. Dunbar, chief of the bureau of license, stated in a report to his superiors in the Fish and Game Division, “we have found it is going to be quite a difficult problem to be able to obtain a suitable tag with fasteners that, when they are once placed on the bird, will not be removable.” Dunbar plans to order 400,000 tags.
According to Dunbar, each tag will have 10 bands and each band two fasteners, a total of 8,000,000 fasteners. He estimates it will take more than two months alone just to attach the fasteners to the bands.

Open Season On Weapons
San Francisco, July 21—California hunters may go after deer and other big game animals this season with practically any type of rifle they wish, and even bows and arrows, says Division of Fish and Game.
In the interests of conservation, the following arms and ammunition have been outlawed for the taking of deer, bear, antelope, and elk.
Shotguns using shot or slugs, pistols, rifles using rim fire cartridges, or bullets with full metal jackets.
Muzzle-loaders, .22's, and foreign firearms are legal, as long as they do not violate the above restrictions. Only limitation for bow and arrow hunters afield during the special 10-day archery deer seasons is that arrowheads blades must be not less than ½-inch wide.
“One after another, restrictive legislation, artificial propagation and stocking, and refuges, to name only three of the more important fish and game management tools, have been on trial and found wanting.”—Dr. Ira N. Gabrielson president, Wildlife Management Institute.
Thoroughbred Racing Returns to Del Mar Track
They'll be off and running once more at cool Del Mar by the sea next Tuesday when the Del Mar Turf Club opens its 10th annual racing season of 41 days' duration. A new post time will be in effect this year, with the first race going to the barrier each week day at 1:30 p.m. Another innovation this season will be daily double wagering on the first and second races, the first operation of its type in the modern history of racing in Southern California. There'll be eight races daily with at least one feature event. Highlight of opening day will be the $5000 Inaugural Handicap at six furlongs.
Archery Deer Season Opens
San Francisco,—California's first 1949 special archery deer hunting season begins one-half hour before sunrise Monday, July 25, ending August 3, reports the division of fish and game.
Bow and arrow hunters, equipped with archery hunting licenses and special deer tags, may take two bucks in the central and south coastal areas, except San Diego county, during the 10-day season.
The second 10-day archery session begins September 3 in the balance of the state, including San Diego county.
No archery hunting is permitted during the regular deer seasons, which open three days following the close of bow and arrow periods in each section. Arrowhead blades must be not less than ⅓-inch wide.
"In the sportsman's mind, the bag limit is a point beyond which no one ventures and not a goal to be attained."—William Voight, Jr., western representative, Izaak Walton League.
